Cebuano interpreting services

Cebuano is not spoken the same way everywhere. The speech of Cebu City is the usual reference point. On Bohol, Boholano has its own sound, with the y of other speakers often heard as a j. In Davao and much of Mindanao, Cebuano has absorbed a good deal of Tagalog, and younger speakers from the cities switch into English constantly. A trained interpreter follows all of these, but for a long medical history or a witness statement it helps to tell us the province.

Consecutive interpreting suits nearly every Cebuano booking. Politeness matters too: speakers often agree with a professional to avoid seeming rude, so a "yes" to "do you understand?" is worth checking with a question that needs a real answer.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Cebuano interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Cebuano translation

Philippine birth and marriage certificates from the Philippine Statistics Authority are already in English, so they rarely need translating. The Cebuano work we see is personal and informal: text messages and Messenger chats produced as evidence, voice notes, handwritten letters, and statements given by family members back home. Chats need a translator who reads Bisaya as it is typed, with shortened spellings and English words mixed in. Each of our translators works into their native language, so Cebuano into English is done by a native English speaker who knows the language well.

Filipino names follow Spanish-era spellings and a middle name taken from the mother's maiden surname. We copy names exactly as the passport shows them and flag any document that spells them differently.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Cebuano audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Cebuano translation

English into Cebuano is less common, because most Filipino readers in Britain read English. It earns its place for older relatives, for people with limited schooling, and for sensitive material such as safeguarding letters or tenancy rights. We write in a plain modern Cebuano that readers from Cebu, Bohol and Mindanao all follow, keeping familiar English loanwords where a pure Cebuano term would only confuse.

Cebuano court and police interpreters

In UK legal work Cebuano turns up in employment disputes, family proceedings, immigration appeals and criminal cases where a witness or victim is more comfortable in Bisaya than in Tagalog or English. We look for Cebuano interpreters who have worked in legal settings and, where interpreters holding them exist for Cebuano, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or NRPSI registration (the National Register of Public Service Interpreters). Because the pool is small, a video interpreter may be the fastest route to a qualified one.

Cebuano interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Cebuano interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Cebuano interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Cebuano interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Cebuano translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Cebuano interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Cebuano interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
