Waray interpreting services

The language takes its name from its own word for "nothing" or "none", waray, and it is also called Waray-Waray or Lineyte-Samarnon. Before booking, find out whether the person grew up in Samar, in the Waray-speaking north and east of Leyte, or on Biliran. Western and southern Leyte are different again: a speaker from Ormoc or Maasin usually has Cebuano as a first language and Waray as a second, and may prefer a Cebuano interpreter for anything that matters.

Most appointments suit consecutive interpreting, a few sentences at a time. Do allow extra minutes. Speakers mix in Filipino and English words freely, and the interpreter sometimes needs to pause and confirm which meaning was intended.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Waray interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Waray translation

Very little official paper from the Philippines is written in Waray. Birth, marriage and death certificates from the Philippine Statistics Authority, police clearances and school records are issued in English, so a UK office can often read them as they stand. Waray translation work is mostly personal: letters, text messages and chat histories offered as evidence of a relationship in a visa case, voice notes that need transcribing first, or a statement from a relative back home.

Each of our translators works into their native language, so Waray to English is done by a native English speaker who reads Waray fluently. Spellings vary a lot in informal Waray writing, and we keep the original wording beside the English wherever it could be disputed. Certified translations come with a signed statement of accuracy for use in the UK.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Waray audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Waray translation

Translating into Waray is uncommon, and the first question is whether it's needed at all. Most adults from the eastern Visayas were taught in Filipino and English and read those more easily than written Waray. Where Waray is the right choice, for an older reader or someone with little schooling, we write in the Tacloban-based standard with everyday words, and keep English loanwords speakers already use rather than inventing native terms nobody would recognise.

Waray court and police interpreters

Waray speakers come into British legal work through family proceedings, employment disputes involving care and domestic workers, and now and then a criminal matter. The DPSI is not offered in every language. Our first choice for a hearing is a Waray interpreter who has done court or police work before, ideally one with the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or a place on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), if any Waray interpreter holding them can be found. If none is free, tell the court early, so it can ask the defendant or witness whether a Tagalog interpreter would be acceptable.

Waray interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Waray interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Waray interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Waray interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Waray translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Waray interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Waray interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
