Xitsonga interpreting services

Standard Xitsonga, as written and taught in South Africa, belongs to a small cluster of related varieties. Across the border in Mozambique the closest is Changana, with Ronga around Maputo and Tswa further north, the last being distant enough that some linguists count it as a separate language. For a long or sensitive booking, tell us which country and region the speaker comes from and we will try to match.

Xitsonga is not a Nguni language, even though it took in a good deal of Zulu vocabulary in the nineteenth century, and it is quite different from its Limpopo neighbours Tshivenda and Sepedi. Consecutive interpreting suits clinics and legal interviews. For a family meeting or a case conference with several people talking, ask whether the interpreter should sit beside the client and interpret quietly as the discussion goes on.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Xitsonga interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Xitsonga translation

Each Xitsonga translator we use translates into their native language: English versions are written by native English speakers who know Xitsonga, and Xitsonga versions by native Xitsonga speakers. Most official South African certificates are in English, so the Xitsonga material brought to us is usually letters, statements, church and customary marriage records, WhatsApp and SMS evidence, or recordings that need transcribing before they can be translated.

Tone is not marked in Xitsonga spelling, so a handwritten note can be read more than one way, and the translator decides from context and says so in a note if the meaning stays open. Names follow the identity document. Where a person's name appears in two spellings across their papers we point it out, so the certified translation doesn't add a third.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Xitsonga audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Xitsonga translation

Translation into Xitsonga for readers in Britain should normally use South African standard spelling, which is what people from Limpopo and Mpumalanga learnt at school. Readers from Mozambique will follow it, although their own spelling conventions and some everyday words differ; if your readers are mainly Mozambican, say so and we will adjust. Terms such as GP, safeguarding or Universal Credit have no ready equivalent, so we explain them in plain words the first time they appear.

Xitsonga court and police interpreters

In UK legal settings Xitsonga comes up in criminal interviews, family court and immigration appeals, but the numbers are small. A legal booking goes first to Xitsonga interpreters who have worked in courts or police stations before; where any Xitsonga interpreter holds the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or is on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), that person is our first call. If we cannot find someone with those credentials for your date, we tell you well before the hearing rather than on the morning, so the court or solicitor can decide what to do.

Xitsonga interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Xitsonga interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Xitsonga interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Xitsonga interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Xitsonga translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Xitsonga interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Xitsonga interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
