Shangane interpreting services

In Mozambique, Changana is the main language of Gaza province and is widely spoken in and around Maputo, where Ronga is heard too. When you book a Shangane interpreter, tell us whether the speaker is from Mozambique, Zimbabwe or South Africa, and whether they are comfortable in Portuguese. An interpreter from the same country will also know the institutions the speaker keeps referring to, from the local health post to the district administration.

The name itself can matter. Some speakers are happy to be called Shangaan; others prefer Tsonga, because the older name is tied to the Gaza kingdom's rule rather than to the people themselves. Our interpreters use whichever the client uses. Consecutive interpreting is the norm, and video widens the choice considerably for a language this rare in Britain.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Shangane interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Shangane translation

Our translators translate only into their native language. Official documents from Mozambique, such as the birth certificate (certidão de nascimento), the identity card (bilhete de identidade) and school certificates, are issued in Portuguese, so they are translated from Portuguese rather than from Shangane; we can handle both in one order. Written Shangane turns up mostly in personal letters, church records, statements and messages.

Spelling conventions for the language differ between Mozambique and South Africa, so the same word or surname can appear in two forms on one person's papers. We keep the spelling the person uses on their identity documents and point out any variant a UK official might question.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Shangane audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Shangane translation

For Shangane readers, the choice is between South African standard spelling and the Mozambican conventions. If your readers are mainly from Mozambique, we write in the Mozambican form with the words they use day to day; for a mixed readership, the South African standard reaches more people. Some Mozambican readers will find a Portuguese version easier still, and we can prepare both side by side.

Shangane court and police interpreters

Shangane is needed in UK legal work mainly in immigration and asylum matters, family proceedings and criminal cases involving people from Mozambique or Zimbabwe. Our search for a legal interpreter starts with Shangane speakers who have courtroom or police experience, and we give priority to anyone with the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or a place on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), where such interpreters exist for this language. If the witness also speaks Portuguese well, a tribunal may prefer a qualified Portuguese interpreter, who is far easier to find; the witness's own view of which language serves them best should decide it.

Shangane interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Shangane interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Shangane interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Shangane interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Shangane translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Shangane interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Shangane interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
