Siswati interpreting services

Two groups speak Siswati: citizens of Eswatini, and South Africans from Mpumalanga, where the language sits alongside Zulu, Tsonga and Northern Sotho. The two varieties understand each other without effort, but the vocabulary of daily life differs a little, and a South African speaker may switch into Zulu or English mid-sentence. Tell us the person's home area and their other languages when you book.

Because so few Siswati interpreters work in Britain, remote consecutive interpreting by video is the usual arrangement. It suits clinic visits, school meetings and legal advice, and it lets us offer a patient an interpreter who lives nowhere near them.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Siswati interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Siswati translation

Government paperwork in Eswatini, from birth and marriage certificates to school results, is normally produced in English, so it rarely needs translating. Documents written in Siswati tend to be letters, statements from relatives, papers about a marriage under Swazi law and custom, and messages that a solicitor wants in English.

Each translator on the job works into their own native language. Names are copied exactly as they appear in the passport, including clan surnames such as Dlamini, which is shared by the royal family and a great many ordinary families, so a surname alone says nothing about a person's standing.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Siswati audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Siswati translation

When we translate English into Siswati for readers in the UK, we use Eswatini spelling and the standard taught in its schools, not Zulu forms, which a Swati reader notices at once. Health leaflets need particular thought: a direct English style can read as rude in Siswati, so we keep the wording courteous while leaving the medical facts exactly as they are.

Siswati court and police interpreters

Siswati is seldom heard in UK courts, and when it is the setting is usually an asylum appeal, a family case or a criminal matter involving a witness or defendant from Eswatini. We look for Siswati interpreters with experience of legal work and, where interpreters holding them exist for Siswati, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or a place on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Very few do, so we will tell you plainly what is available, and ask the court early about a video link.

Siswati interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Siswati interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Siswati interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Siswati interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Siswati translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Siswati interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Siswati interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
