Pulaar interpreting services

Fula is a chain of related speech that runs right across West Africa, and Pulaar sits at its western end. Within Pulaar, the speech of Fuuta Tooro, the valley of the Senegal River, is the form most people treat as the reference, while the Fulakunda spoken further south in Casamance and Guinea-Bissau sounds noticeably different. Before we book, we ask three things: which country the client comes from, which region, and which other languages they use at home. The grammar has its own traps. Nouns fall into many classes, and the first consonant of a word can change between singular and plural, so that one Fula person is a Pullo and the people as a whole are Fulbe. Consecutive interpreting suits most Pulaar appointments, and it works well over video.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Pulaar interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Pulaar translation

Few of the papers a Pulaar speaker brings to a UK office are written in Pulaar. Senegalese certificates are in French, Mauritanian ones in Arabic and French, and Gambian ones in English, so tell us which languages your documents use and we will quote for each. Where Pulaar itself is on the page, it is usually a handwritten letter, a witness statement, or a message typed in Adlam on a phone. Our translators work in both directions, and each translates into their native language, so English versions are written by a native English speaker.

Surnames need care. The same Fula family name appears as Diallo in Senegal, Jallow in the Gambia and Jalloh in Sierra Leone, and Ba can turn up as Bah. We follow the passport spelling and point out any document that disagrees with it.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Pulaar audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Pulaar translation

For leaflets and letters aimed at readers from Senegal or Mauritania, the Latin spelling used in national literacy classes is the safe default. Adlam has a keen following, especially among younger readers with roots in Guinea, and it now works on most phones, so for a community project it can be worth printing both. Bear in mind that many older Pulaar speakers read French or Arabic better than written Pulaar; a short audio or video version often reaches them where a printed page does not.

Pulaar court and police interpreters

Pulaar is needed most in the immigration tribunal, in criminal cases and in family proceedings where a parent speaks no English. For any legal booking we look for Pulaar interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Pulaar, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Because qualified Pulaar interpreters are so few, we confirm the dialect match with the solicitor before the hearing date rather than on the morning of it.

How to book a Pulaar interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Pulaar language

Pulaar is the western form of Fula, an Atlantic language of the Niger-Congo family. It is spoken mainly in Senegal, Mauritania, the Gambia and Guinea-Bissau.

Pulaar is written in the Latin alphabet; the Adlam alphabet is also used.

Before you book: Pulaar speakers from Senegal and Mauritania usually follow each other easily; Pular from Guinea is close but not identical.

Pulaar interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Pulaar interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Pulaar interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Pulaar interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Pulaar translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Pulaar interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Pulaar interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
