Mandinka interpreting services

Mandinka belongs to the Manding chain, whose other members include Bambara in Mali, Maninka in Guinea and Dyula further east. Neighbours along that chain understand one another in part, which is enough for a chat and not for a consent form. Within Mandinka, Gambian speech has taken in English and Wolof words, while speakers from Guinea-Bissau often slip into Portuguese or the Kriol of Bissau. So we ask where the person grew up and which other languages they use before we book. Consecutive interpreting is the norm; telephone work suits short calls, and video is better for anything longer, because the interpreter can see when a question has not landed.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Mandinka interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Mandinka translation

Gambian certificates, passports and school records are already in English and seldom need translating at all. Papers from Casamance come in French and from Guinea-Bissau in Portuguese; we can quote for those alongside any Mandinka. Written Mandinka turns up in letters, personal statements and older religious or family writing in Arabic script. Each of our translators translates into their native language, so an English version is always the work of a native English speaker.

Spelling is the recurring snag. The same surnames are written Touray, Ceesay and Kanteh in the Gambia but Touré, Cissé and Kanté in Senegal, and first names drawn from Arabic have Gambian forms such as Lamin. We match the passport and note every variant in a covering remark.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Mandinka audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Mandinka translation

For readers from the Gambia, use the Latin spelling taught there, with English loanwords where people really use them. Readers from Casamance may be more used to French-style spellings of names and places, so we adjust those. Many older speakers never learned to read Mandinka, and for a public-health message or a tenancy notice, a spoken recording, played at a surgery or shared by phone, can reach people that print will not.

Mandinka court and police interpreters

Mandinka interpreters are asked for in immigration and asylum appeals, in family proceedings, and in criminal matters where a defendant or a witness has limited English. In legal settings we look for Mandinka interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Mandinka, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Kinship terms and place names are the usual sources of dispute in these hearings, so a pre-hearing word between the interpreter and counsel about how they will be rendered saves time later.

Mandinka interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Mandinka interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Mandinka interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Mandinka interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Mandinka translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Mandinka interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Mandinka interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
