Fulani interpreting services
"Fulani" reaches English through Hausa, so it is the name Nigerians, Ghanaians and many Cameroonians use when speaking English about the language. The speakers themselves say Fulfulde. The forms spoken in Nigeria, Cameroon and Niger differ in vocabulary and pronunciation from the Pular of Guinea, enough that for a long or sensitive appointment we match the interpreter to the eastern varieties rather than send whoever speaks Fula. Interpreting is almost always consecutive. Ask the speaker, too, whether English, Hausa or French is a comfortable second language, because it tells us who can step in if the ideal interpreter is booked elsewhere.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Fulani interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Fulani translation
Nigerian birth certificates, marriage certificates and court orders are issued in English, so they rarely need translating at all. Cameroonian papers may be in French or in English, depending on the region that issued them, and those from Niger are in French. What does come to us in Fulfulde is personal: letters, WhatsApp messages, a statement written by a relative. Our translators each work into their native language, so a Fulani text bound for a UK solicitor goes to a native English speaker.
Fulfulde in Latin letters uses hooked consonants such as ɓ and ɗ. English-language documents drop the hooks, so one name may be spelt two ways across a person's papers. We follow the passport and note any difference.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Fulani audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Fulani translation
If your readers are Fulani families from Nigeria or Cameroon, ask for eastern Fulfulde, not a text prepared for Guinea or Senegal. Keep the hooked letters, and check the finished file on a phone to see that they display. Some Nigerian Fulani read Hausa or English more easily than written Fulfulde, so find out before you print; an English and Fulfulde version side by side often works best.
Fulani court and police interpreters
For a Fulani speaker in a UK court, the booking should name the country as well as the language. We look for Fulani interpreters with courtroom and solicitor experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Fula, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). An interpreter who knows Nigerian or Cameroonian Fulfulde can be hard to find at short notice, so give us the hearing date as soon as it is listed, and ask whether the court will accept a video link.
How to book a Fulani interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Fulani language
Fulani is the name for Fula used in Nigeria and in much English writing; it comes from Hausa. See also our Fula interpreter and translator page.
Fula is an Atlantic language of the Niger-Congo family, spoken mainly in West Africa and the Sahel, from Senegal and Guinea to Nigeria and Cameroon.
Fula is written in the Latin alphabet; the Arabic script and the Adlam alphabet are also used. Varieties include Pulaar (Senegal and Mauritania), Pular (Guinea) and Fulfulde (Mali to Cameroon).
Before you book: Fula is spoken in around twenty countries and changes a lot from west to east. A Pular speaker from Guinea and a Fulfulde speaker from Nigeria may need different interpreters, so tell us the country.

Fulani interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Fulani interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Fulani interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Fulani interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Does the Fulani dialect matter when booking an interpreter?
It can. Fula varieties include Pulaar (Senegal and Mauritania), Pular (Guinea) and Fulfulde (Mali to Cameroon). Tell us where the speaker is from, or the dialect they use, so the interpreter is a good match for them.
Can you certify Fulani translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Fulani interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Fulani interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
