Indonesian interpreting services
Formal Indonesian, the bahasa baku heard on the news and used in government, is taught in every school across the archipelago, so an interpreter who speaks it well will be understood by a speaker from Sumatra, Java, Sulawesi or Papua. Casual speech is another matter. Young people from Jakarta use gue and lo for I and you, borrowed from the city's Betawi dialect, and every region colours Indonesian with its own words and accent. For a long statement or a mental health assessment, tell us where the speaker is from so we can find an interpreter used to that speech.
Consecutive interpreting works for almost every appointment. Adults are addressed as Bapak (Pak) or Ibu (Bu) out of respect, and a good interpreter keeps that courtesy intact.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Indonesian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Indonesian translation
Indonesians coming to the UK bring a familiar set of papers: the KTP identity card with its 16-digit NIK number, the Kartu Keluarga that lists everyone in a household, the akta kelahiran (birth certificate), a marriage book or certificate, and school and university certificates known as ijazah. Old family documents may use pre-1972 spelling, with oe, dj and tj where modern Indonesian writes u, j and c.
We give every translation to a translator working into their native language, so Indonesian into English is done by a native English speaker. A single name is never split to fill a surname box, and we certify the finished translation for the Home Office, UK universities and other official use.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Indonesian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Indonesian translation
Translate for Indonesia in Indonesian vocabulary, not Malaysian. Government is pemerintah, a hospital is rumah sakit, and the office is kantor, a word taken from Dutch that Malaysians don't use. Official and health information should be in standard Indonesian following the national spelling rules, polite without being stiff. Slang from Jakarta reads badly in print, so keep it out of anything official.
Indonesian court and police interpreters
Indonesian comes up in employment tribunals, family hearings, immigration appeals and criminal cases, often with someone who has little English and a lot at stake. We look for Indonesian interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Indonesian, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or entry on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Qualified people are few, so book as early as you can; a video interpreter can cover a hearing anywhere in Britain when the court allows it.
How to book an Indonesian interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Indonesian language
Indonesian is a standardised form of Malay, of the Austronesian family. It is spoken mainly in Indonesia. Indonesian is the official language of Indonesia.
Indonesian is written in the Latin alphabet.
Before you book: Indonesian and Malay are largely mutually intelligible but differ in spelling conventions and vocabulary, so a document for Indonesia needs an Indonesian translator.

Indonesian interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book an Indonesian interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Indonesian interpreters work nearby.
How much does an Indonesian interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Indonesian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Indonesian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match an Indonesian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
