Javanese interpreting services

The speech of Solo and Yogyakarta is treated as the polished standard, and it is what most interpreters learned. East Javanese, around Surabaya and Malang, is blunter and has its own vocabulary, while the Banyumasan dialect of western Central Java, nicknamed ngapak, keeps a flat "a" that other Javanese find unmistakable. Javanese in Suriname grew apart from Java's over more than a century. Sundanese, spoken in West Java, is a separate language, not a dialect of Javanese, so don't book one for the other.

Most people who need Javanese in the UK speak Indonesian too, so choose Javanese when the conversation is personal, the speaker is elderly, or exact wording matters. Remote interpreting is often the only practical route.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Javanese interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Javanese translation

Almost every official paper from Java is written in Indonesian, so a Javanese speaker's birth certificate or diploma actually needs an Indonesian translator. Javanese translation proper is for letters, messages, song lyrics and audio recordings, and for older manuscripts in the traditional script, which only a specialist reads with confidence.

Many Javanese people use one name only, and names often carry Sanskrit-derived elements such as Sri or Budi; we copy them as the passport shows them. Our translators work into their native language, and certified translations are accepted for UK official use.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Javanese audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Javanese translation

Think about the reader first. For most purposes Indonesian reaches Javanese speakers more reliably, since that is the language they read at school. If Javanese is the right choice, perhaps for older readers or a community event, a respectful krama style avoids sounding rude to elders, and the Latin alphabet is what nearly everyone reads today.

Javanese court and police interpreters

Javanese is seldom used in British courts; a defendant or witness from Java usually gives evidence in Indonesian. It becomes necessary when the person's Indonesian is weak or when intercepted calls and messages in Javanese form part of the evidence. We look for Javanese interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Javanese, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Be prepared for this search to take time.

Javanese interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Javanese interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Javanese interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Javanese interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Javanese translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Javanese interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Javanese interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
