Bahasa Melayu interpreting services
The first question is which country the speaker is from. Brunei Malay, the everyday speech of Brunei, sounds quite unlike the Malaysian standard and has words of its own. Singaporean Malays mostly grew up with English at school, so many need an interpreter only for technical or emotional conversations. Within Malaysia the gap is widest for speakers from Kelantan and from Sabah or Sarawak. An interpreter from the right background matters most for sensitive or long appointments, where a speaker tires of adjusting to someone else's Malay.
Register also shifts with the listener. Older people are addressed as Pak Cik or Mak Cik (uncle, aunt) rather than with a plain "you", and an interpreter who gets this right keeps an elderly patient at ease.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Bahasa Melayu interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Bahasa Melayu translation
Documents in Bahasa Melayu arrive mainly from Malaysia and Brunei, since Singapore issues most of its papers in English. Brunei still gives the Jawi script a prominent place on signs and some official papers, so a Bruneian certificate may need a translator who reads Jawi as well as Rumi. Religious court orders, marriage records and older family papers are where Jawi turns up most.
Every translation is done by a translator writing in their native language, and we certify it for UK use by the Home Office, universities, employers and banks.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Bahasa Melayu audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Bahasa Melayu translation
Malaysia's language authority, Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka, sets the standard spelling and technical vocabulary, and that standard reads naturally to Bruneians and Singaporean Malays too. For a leaflet or form aimed at all three, we use it and avoid Indonesian terms and regional slang. If your readers are mainly from Brunei, say so, as some official terms and titles differ there.
Bahasa Melayu court and police interpreters
Bahasa Melayu is needed in a British court or tribunal only now and then, and each booking deserves care because the pool is small. We look for interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Bahasa Melayu, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or NRPSI registration (the National Register of Public Service Interpreters). Where the hearing is in a family court or an immigration tribunal, the interpreter should know how marriage and divorce work under Malaysian syariah law as well as civil law, since the documents in the bundle often come from both.
How to book a Bahasa Melayu interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Bahasa Melayu interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Bahasa Melayu interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Bahasa Melayu interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Bahasa Melayu interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Bahasa Melayu translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Bahasa Melayu interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Bahasa Melayu interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
How many people speak Bahasa Melayu in the UK?
At the 2021 Census, 8,014 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Malay as their main language. The local authorities with the most were Manchester (433 people), the City of Westminster (411) and Leeds (271). The census asked for each person's main language, so people who speak Bahasa Melayu at home but gave English as their main language are not in that figure. Scotland and Northern Ireland count languages in their own censuses.
