Vlach interpreting services
Before we book anyone we need to know which Vlach speech is involved, and the simplest way to find out is to ask the person what else they speak. Greek or Albanian points to Aromanian. Serbian points to the Romanian-based dialects of north-eastern Serbia, between the Morava, the Danube and the Timok. Romanian spoken alongside Romani usually means a Vlax Romani speaker, and our Romani page covers that case.
Interpreting is almost always consecutive, a sentence or two at a time. Because the pool of dialect interpreters is so small, a remote interpreter joining by video is often the only realistic way to match the speech exactly, while an interpreter in the national language can more often attend in person.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Vlach interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Vlach translation
Very little official paper is written in Vlach. Birth and marriage certificates, school reports and court papers for Vlach families come in Greek, Albanian, Macedonian, Serbian or Romanian, and we translate from those. Each of our translators translates into their native language, so the English version is written by a native English speaker.
Names need a careful eye. An Aromanian family name can take a Greek form on one certificate and an Albanian or Slavic form on another, and Serbian records may be in Cyrillic or in Latin letters. We follow the passport spelling and flag any document that disagrees with it. Aromanian itself is written in the Latin alphabet, using a spelling agreed at a symposium in Bitola in 1997 that not every writer follows.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Vlach audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Vlach translation
Written Vlach reaches few readers, because most speakers learnt to read in Greek, Albanian, Serbian, Macedonian or Romanian. For a leaflet or letter aimed at a Vlach reader, a translation into one of those will usually be understood more easily, and we can advise which. If the text must be in Aromanian, for a cultural project or a family event, the Bitola spelling is the one most readers in the Balkans will recognise. For spoken instructions, such as care after a hospital stay, an interpreted phone call may do more good than anything printed.
Vlach court and police interpreters
A court or tribunal has to be sure the witness understands every word, and for a Vlach speaker that raises a choice best made early: an interpreter in the speaker's own dialect, or one in Serbian, Greek or Albanian, which the witness may speak well but not as a first language. Tell the court which it is. We ask for legal experience first. The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) and registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) are the usual signs of a court-ready interpreter, and we look for them wherever someone holding one exists for Vlach; for the dialects that may not be the case, and we will tell you plainly.
How to book a Vlach interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Vlach interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Vlach interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Vlach interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Vlach interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Vlach translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Vlach interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Vlach interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
