Sranang Tongo interpreting services

The name simply means the tongue of Suriname, and it is the language that people of African, Indian, Javanese, Chinese and Maroon descent there use with one another. That matters when booking: a Surinamese client of Hindustani or Javanese background may speak Sranang Tongo fluently while their family language is Sarnami or Javanese, and their first language for anything formal is Dutch. Ask which they would choose for a doctor or a lawyer.

The interpreters with the deepest Sranang Tongo are mostly based in Suriname or the Netherlands, so remote consecutive interpreting is the normal arrangement. Maroon languages such as Ndyuka and Saramaccan are related but distinct, and a speaker of one of those needs an interpreter for that language.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Sranang Tongo interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Sranang Tongo translation

Almost no official paperwork is written in Sranang Tongo. Birth certificates, diplomas and court records from Suriname are in Dutch, and we translate them as Dutch documents. What does arrive in Sranang Tongo is personal and informal: letters, text messages, voice notes and recordings of calls. Each translator works into their native language, so Sranan into English is handled by a native English speaker who knows the language well.

Spelling varies from writer to writer. Older texts and many private messages follow Dutch spelling habits, writing oe where the modern spelling uses u, so we record the original exactly and translate what was meant.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Sranang Tongo audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Sranang Tongo translation

Before commissioning a translation into Sranang Tongo, consider whether Dutch will reach the reader better, because most Surinamese adults read Dutch far more than Sranan. Where Sranang Tongo is the right choice, for example for an older relative, a community notice or a message meant to feel personal, we use the modern standard spelling and everyday wording, since formal written Sranan is unfamiliar to many readers.

Sranang Tongo court and police interpreters

Sranang Tongo is seldom heard in a British courtroom, and many Surinamese defendants and witnesses are well served by a Dutch interpreter. It becomes necessary when the person is not comfortable in Dutch, or when recorded conversations in Sranang Tongo form part of the evidence. For that work our first requirement is an interpreter who has worked in legal settings before; after that we look for the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law), or for registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), wherever a Sranang Tongo interpreter holding either can be found. As such qualifications are uncommon for this language, we tell you plainly what the interpreter we propose does hold.

Sranang Tongo interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Sranang Tongo interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Sranang Tongo interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Sranang Tongo interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Sranang Tongo translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Sranang Tongo interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Sranang Tongo interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
