Papiamento interpreting services
Even the name of the language shows the split between the islands: Papiamento on Aruba, Papiamentu on Curaçao and Bonaire. The spoken varieties differ in accent, intonation and a share of their vocabulary, yet islanders converse across them with ease. When you book, the useful questions are which island the person grew up on and how long they have lived in the Netherlands, since years in Rotterdam or Amsterdam bring more Dutch into everyday speech.
Consecutive interpreting suits most appointments. In a witness statement or a police record, ask the interpreter to note when the speaker answers in Dutch or English instead of Papiamento, because a later reader may want to know which words were the person's own.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Papiamento interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Papiamento translation
Official records from the islands, such as civil registry extracts, are often issued in Dutch, so check the language of a certificate before you order: you may need a Dutch translator rather than a Papiamento one, and we can arrange either. Papiamento itself turns up in personal letters, text messages and recorded conversations used as evidence, and in material from island schools and churches.
Every translator we use works into their native language. Spelling rules differ between the islands, so the word for "with" is written cu in Aruba and ku in Curaçao, and our translator reads each text in the spelling it was written in.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Papiamento audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Papiamento translation
When translating English into Papiamento, choose the island first. Aruba adopted its own etymological spelling and made Papiamento an official language in 2003, and Aruban readers expect that spelling; readers from Curaçao and Bonaire expect the phonetic one. For a leaflet meant for everyone from the islands, many UK organisations find Dutch reaches the widest readership, with Papiamento added for a warmer, more personal message.
Papiamento court and police interpreters
In UK courts, a Papiamento speaker who is fluent in conversational English may still need an interpreter for evidence, cross-examination and legal terms, and the judge will usually want to know which language the witness is most at ease in. We look for Papiamento interpreters who have worked in legal settings, and we look for the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or entry on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) wherever a Papiamento interpreter with those credentials can be found. Since law on the islands follows the Dutch system, an interpreter with good Dutch helps when documents or terms from island proceedings come up.

Papiamento interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Papiamento interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Papiamento interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Papiamento interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Papiamento translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Papiamento interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Papiamento interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
