Nuer interpreting services
Nuer is spoken by several large sections of the people who call themselves Naath, among them the Jikany, Lou and Gaawar, and each has its own accent and some words of its own. Speakers from different sections follow one another without real difficulty, so matching the section is a courtesy more than a necessity. What does matter is making sure the booking is for Nuer at all: South Sudanese clients are sometimes listed simply as speaking "Sudanese" or "Arabic".
Nuer is a tonal language, and words that look alike on paper can be told apart only by pitch or vowel length. Consecutive interpreting, a few sentences at a time, suits it best. Ask the speaker which other languages they use; many who spent years in Ethiopia or Kenya also have Amharic, Swahili or English.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Nuer interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Nuer translation
Official paperwork from South Sudan is issued in English, and older Sudanese records are usually in Arabic, so a Nuer translator is more often asked for witness statements, letters, text and voice messages, or church and community documents. Every one of our translators works into their native language: Nuer into English goes to a native English speaker, and English into Nuer to a native Nuer speaker.
Written Nuer marks vowel quality with dots and underlines, and English-language forms drop them. We keep the passport spelling of every name and point out where two documents spell the same person differently. When the translation is certified, it is ready to hand to a UK court, a council or the Home Office.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Nuer audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Nuer translation
The written standard is based on the eastern Jikany speech around Nasir, and that is what Nuer Bibles, primers and most printed material use. Not every adult reads Nuer, particularly those whose schooling was cut short by war, so for health advice or tenancy information a recorded version read by a Nuer speaker can reach more people than a leaflet. Tell us how the text will be used and we will suggest what works.
Nuer court and police interpreters
Nuer speakers appear in UK courts and tribunals most often in asylum appeals, family proceedings and criminal cases, where a witness's account of events in South Sudan may be central. For this work we look for Nuer interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters with those qualifications exist for Nuer, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Because the recent conflict has often followed ethnic lines, a party may object to an interpreter's background, and it is better to hear that before the hearing than during it. An interpreter joining by video can be arranged where the court permits.
How to book a Nuer interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.

About the Nuer language
Nuer is a Western Nilotic language, spoken mainly in South Sudan (Upper Nile and Unity) and the Gambela region of Ethiopia.
Nuer is written in the Latin alphabet.
Before you book: Nuer and Dinka are related but separate languages. Given South Sudan's history of conflict, never assume one will do for the other.

Nuer interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Nuer interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Nuer interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Nuer interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Nuer translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Nuer interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Nuer interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
