Dinka interpreting services
Dinka is not one uniform speech. The dialect groups spread across a large area of South Sudan, and a speaker from Bor or Twic East in the south-east may find the Dinka of Bahr el Ghazal in the west hard going for the first few minutes. Linguists sometimes treat the main groups as closely related languages rather than dialects. For a short GP visit most professional interpreters bridge the gap. For a long interview, where every detail will be written down, we try to match the interpreter's own dialect to the client's.
Consecutive interpreting suits nearly every Dinka booking. Allow extra time: a question put in English often needs a short explanation in Dinka, because the institution behind it, a tribunal or a care plan, may have no equivalent back home.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Dinka interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Dinka translation
English is the official language of South Sudan, so many documents issued there since independence in 2011 are already in English, and older papers from Khartoum are usually in Arabic. Written Dinka turns up in other places: handwritten letters, church material, witness statements taken in the client's own words, and audio or video recordings that a solicitor needs transcribed and translated. Our translators each work into their native language, so Dinka to English is handled by a native English speaker who knows the language well.
The Dinka alphabet adds letters such as the open e and open o and the velar nasal to the usual Roman ones. Names are best copied as they appear in the passport or Home Office papers, even when the Dinka spelling differs.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Dinka audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Dinka translation
Before ordering an English to Dinka translation, ask whether the reader actually reads Dinka. Plenty of adults learned to read in English or Arabic, or not at all, and would be better served by a recorded Dinka version played on a phone. Where a written text is right, we keep the sentences short, avoid terms that exist only in British administration, and ask where the readers' families come from, so the wording suits them rather than one district's speech.
Dinka court and police interpreters
In court and at tribunals Dinka is needed for asylum appeals, family proceedings about children, and criminal cases. The evidence may turn on dates and ages that were never recorded, since births in rural South Sudan often went unregistered, so the interpreter must render "about the rainy season" exactly and not tidy it into a month. For hearings we choose Dinka interpreters who have worked in legal settings before, and where any Dinka interpreter holds the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or is on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), we ask for them first.
How to book a Dinka interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Dinka language
Dinka is a Western Nilotic language, spoken mainly in South Sudan.
Dinka is written in the Latin alphabet. Varieties include several dialect groups, including Padang, Rek, Agar and Bor.
Before you book: Many South Sudanese also speak Juba Arabic. Dinka and Nuer are related but separate languages, and one is never a substitute for the other.

Dinka interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Dinka interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Dinka interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Dinka interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Does the Dinka dialect matter when booking an interpreter?
It can. Dinka varieties include several dialect groups, including Padang, Rek, Agar and Bor. Tell us where the speaker is from, or the dialect they use, so the interpreter is a good match for them.
Can you certify Dinka translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Dinka interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Dinka interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
