Minbei interpreting services

Jian'ou and Jianyang are usually taken as the representative dialects of Northern Min, so an interpreter from either town is the best start. Because the pool is so small, the interpreter we find may come from a different county, and the first few minutes of the appointment should be spent checking that speaker and interpreter understand each other well. If they do not, stop and say so: an appointment interpreted into half-understood Northern Min is worse than one held in the person's second language, Mandarin, with their agreement. Consecutive interpreting suits almost every setting, and it gives the interpreter room to check a word before going on.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Minbei interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Minbei translation

Northern Min is not the language of documents. Certificates, household registers and school records from Nanping prefecture are written in standard Chinese, in simplified characters, and names follow pinyin, the spelling on a Chinese passport. There is one curiosity: in the 1890s missionaries created a romanised script for the Jian'ou dialect, publishing Bible translations in it from 1896 and a dictionary in 1901, and some older members of Christian congregations there can still read it. If you have papers in that script, tell us, because very few translators can read it.

English versions are written by native English speakers, since our translators work only into their native language, and certified translations are set out as UK Visas and Immigration expects.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Minbei audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Minbei translation

Translate into standard written Chinese in simplified characters for readers from northern Fujian. Northern Min has no everyday written form, and the missionary romanisation is now read by only a few older churchgoers, so it is not a practical choice for a letter or leaflet. If the reader struggles with written Chinese, an interpreter can read the translation through with them at an appointment.

Minbei court and police interpreters

A court or police station is unlikely ever to have met Northern Min, and the booking may arrive as "Chinese" or "Fujianese". For legal work we look for Northern Min interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Northern Min, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Realistically, a legally qualified Mandarin interpreter may be the best available, so ask the defendant, with an interpreter present, whether Mandarin is acceptable, and record the answer. A video link can bring in a native speaker if one can be found elsewhere in the UK.

Minbei interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Minbei interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Minbei interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Minbei interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Minbei translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Northern Min is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Minbei interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Minbei interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
