Fukienese interpreting services

Fujian is mountainous, and at one time nearly every valley had its own speech. The province still has several branches of Min, Hakka in the west and pockets of other languages, so three questions do most of the work when booking. Which town or county did the person grow up in? What do they call their own language? And how comfortable are they in Mandarin? A speaker from Fuqing who calls it Fuqing speech needs a Fuzhounese interpreter, ideally one who knows that variety, while one from Jinjiang who says Minnan needs Hokkien. Most bookings are consecutive.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Fukienese interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Fukienese translation

Whatever the family speaks, documents from Fujian are written in standard Chinese with Simplified characters, so a Fukienese translation is a Chinese translation: birth and household records, notarial certificates, school reports and degree papers. Our translators each work into their native language, which means the certified English version is written by a native English speaker. Older family papers may call the province Fukien and give place names in older spellings, while a modern passport uses pinyin; we keep what each document says and note where two spellings refer to the same place or person.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Fukienese audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Fukienese translation

Readers who grew up in Fujian learned to read standard Chinese in Simplified characters, whichever Fujian language they speak at home, and that is what a letter or leaflet for them should use. Plain, modern wording matters more than dialect: a reader from a rural county may have left school early, so keep sentences short and avoid the formal set phrases of official Chinese. A version with the English and Chinese side by side can also help a reader who is learning English.

Fukienese court and police interpreters

On a court or police booking, Fukienese is not enough information to send the right person, so tell the court well before the hearing which Fujian language is needed. We look for an interpreter of that language with legal experience and, for Hokkien or any other Fujian language where such interpreters exist, a Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). For the smaller Fujian languages, legal experience and a careful check that the interpreter's speech matches the witness's may be the most that can be arranged.

About the languages of Fujian

Fukienese means the speech of Fujian province in south-east China. It usually refers to Hokkien (Southern Min), but people from Fuzhou in the north of the province speak Fuzhounese, a different language.

Fukienese is written in Chinese characters.

Before you book: Tell us the speaker's home town. Hokkien and Fuzhounese speakers cannot follow each other, although most younger people from Fujian also speak Mandarin.

Fukienese interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Fukienese interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Fukienese interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Fukienese interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Fukienese translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Fukienese is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Fukienese interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Fukienese interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
