Bambara interpreting services
Bambara is the first language of people from Bamako, Segou and the centre of Mali, and a second language for many more Malians who grew up speaking Soninke, Fula, Songhay or another tongue. Ask which language the person learnt at home before you book. Someone who uses Bambara at the market may still want their mother tongue for a medical history or a witness statement. The Bamako speech most interpreters know serves as the common standard, and it mixes freely with French.
Most appointments go best consecutively, a few sentences at a time. Whispered simultaneous interpreting is only needed in a courtroom or a long meeting, and video works well once the speaker has seen the interpreter's face and knows who is listening.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Bambara interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Bambara translation
Each of our translators works into their native language, so Bambara documents go to a native English speaker and English ones to a native Bambara translator. In practice most papers from Mali are already in French: birth and marriage certificates, identity cards, school records and court judgments. Those are translated from French, and we will tell you so rather than quote for Bambara.
Bambara itself turns up in personal letters, text messages and voice recordings produced as evidence. Informal writing often drops the extra letters of the official spelling, and some writers use N'Ko, the alphabet devised by Solomana Kanté in 1949. We certify the English translation for the Home Office, courts and universities.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Bambara audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Bambara translation
Before commissioning a Bambara translation, check that the reader can read Bambara at all. Many Malians were taught to read only in French, and far fewer people read Bambara than speak it, so a leaflet may reach more readers in French, or as a short audio recording in Bambara. Where written Bambara is the right choice, we use the standard Latin spelling with its extra letters for open vowels and nasal sounds, and keep the sentences short.
Bambara court and police interpreters
Bambara is most often needed in immigration and asylum appeals, and from time to time in criminal and family proceedings. We choose Bambara interpreters who have done legal work before, and where a Bambara interpreter holds the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or is on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), that person is the one we ask first. Because the pool is small, a suitable interpreter may have to join by video, so ask the court early whether it will allow that. It also helps if the interpreter knows the French legal terms the speaker may have met in Mali or in Europe.
How to book a Bambara interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Bambara language
Bambara is a Manding language of the Mande family, spoken mainly in Mali, where it is the most widely used language.
Bambara is written in the Latin alphabet; the N'Ko alphabet is also used.
Before you book: Bambara, Dioula and Mandinka are closely related and speakers understand one another to a degree, but for legal or medical work book the speaker's own language.

Bambara interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Bambara interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Bambara interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Bambara interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Bambara translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Bambara interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Bambara interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
