Haitian Creole interpreting services

Spoken Creole differs from the north of Haiti to the south in accent and in a few words, but the speech of Port-au-Prince, heard on national radio, is understood everywhere, and an interpreter who uses it will be followed by nearly any Haitian. The bigger question is schooling. A speaker educated in French may drift into French for formal subjects such as money, law or medicine, then back into Creole to explain what happened at home. A good interpreter follows both. Tell us whether the person is comfortable in French as well, because that widens the choice of interpreter a little.

Consecutive interpreting, a few sentences at a time, works best. Haitian Creole interpreters are few in Britain, so plan ahead, and consider video for anything short.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Haitian Creole interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Haitian Creole translation

Most of the documents people bring from Haiti, birth and marriage records, school diplomas, police and court papers, are written in French, because French still dominates the country's administration. We translate those into English and certify them for UK use. Creole itself turns up as personal material: letters, statements, text and voice messages offered as evidence, or a relative's account of events. Each of our translators works into their native language, so the English version is written by a native English speaker.

Spelling has a history too. Haiti adopted an official phonetic spelling for Creole in 1979, so older writing, and informal messages today, may spell the same word several ways. Our translators read the older forms and keep names exactly as they appear on the passport.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Haitian Creole audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Haitian Creole translation

Before commissioning a translation into Haitian Creole, think about who will read it. Many Haitians learned to read in French at school and find written Creole slower, while someone with little schooling may manage neither easily. For a patient leaflet or a letter from a council we write in the standard modern spelling with short, everyday sentences, and for some readers a French version or an audio recording in Creole works better. Ask us and we will advise.

Haitian Creole court and police interpreters

Legal work in Haitian Creole is infrequent in England and Wales, and usually arises in immigration appeals, family proceedings or a criminal case involving a Haitian national. Grammar can blur a statement: one pronoun covers he, she and it, so the record must say who is meant. We look for Haitian Creole interpreters who have worked in legal settings and, if interpreters holding them can be found for Haitian Creole, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Allow time; a remote link can bring in an interpreter from elsewhere in the UK when the court permits.

How to book a Haitian Creole interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Haitian Creole language

Haitian Creole is a French-based creole, spoken mainly in Haiti. It is an official language of Haiti, alongside French.

Haitian Creole is written in the Latin alphabet.

Before you book: French speakers cannot follow Haitian Creole without learning it, and most Haitians speak Creole rather than French at home, so French is rarely a good substitute.

Haitian Creole interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Haitian Creole interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Haitian Creole interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Haitian Creole interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Haitian Creole translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Haitian Creole interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Haitian Creole interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
