Galole interpreting services

Timor-Leste recognises Galoli as one of its national languages, although only Tetum and Portuguese are official. Do not assume that everyone from Manatuto municipality speaks it: inland parts of the municipality have languages of their own. Very few people anywhere work as professional Galoli interpreters, so before booking ask the client three things: where in Timor they grew up, whether they are comfortable in Tetum, and whether they read Portuguese or Indonesian.

With those answers we can decide between a Galoli speaker by video, if one can be found, and an interpreter in the client's strongest second language. Consecutive interpreting, in short turns, suits either choice.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Galole interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Galole translation

Documents from Timor-Leste are rarely in Galoli. Birth and marriage certificates, identity papers and court records are issued in Portuguese or Tetum, and papers from the years of Indonesian rule are in Indonesian, so the translator you need is usually for one of those languages. Real Galoli translation work tends to be letters, recordings and community material. Our translators each work into their native language, and any certified translation into English for UK use is prepared by a native English speaker.

Timorese names often combine Portuguese forms, such as da Costa or Soares, with local names, and spellings shift between documents. We follow the passport and flag any variation.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Galole audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Galole translation

If you need to reach Galoli speakers in writing, think first about whether they will read it. Literacy for most Timorese adults is in Tetum, Portuguese or Indonesian, so a leaflet in Tetum may serve better than one in Galoli. For a spoken message, a recorded explanation or a community project where the home language itself matters, a Galoli translation makes sense, and we will tell you honestly whether we can source it.

Galole court and police interpreters

In a UK courtroom, a Galoli speaker will almost always be served through Tetum or Portuguese, simply because legally trained Galoli interpreters are so hard to find here. We look for interpreters with legal experience and, where anyone holds them in the relevant language, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Before a hearing, make sure the court knows the defendant's or witness's first language is Galoli, so the choice of interpreting language is recorded and can be reviewed if understanding becomes an issue.

Galole interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Galole interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Galole interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Galole interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Galole translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Galole interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Galole interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
