Fang interpreting services

Fang is spoken across three neighbouring countries, and the regional dialects differ in accent and some vocabulary without usually getting in the way of understanding. It belongs to a group of closely related languages that also includes Bulu and Ewondo in Cameroon; a speaker of one may follow some of another, but that is no basis for a legal or medical appointment. When booking, tell us the speaker's home country, their region if they know it, and whether Spanish or French is their stronger second language.

Consecutive interpreting suits most Fang work, with pauses every sentence or two. Because the pool of interpreters is so small, remote interpreting by video is often what makes an appointment possible at all.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Fang interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Fang translation

Fang is written in Latin letters, but few official records are kept in it. Birth and marriage certificates, identity cards, school reports and court papers from Equatorial Guinea are issued in Spanish; those from Gabon and Cameroon are mostly in French. A Fang speaker's paperwork is therefore normally translated from Spanish or French, and we handle that as part of the same job.

Each translator works into their native language, so the English version is written by a native English speaker. We copy names from the passport or identity card exactly, and point out when a name has been spelled differently on two documents. The finished translation is certified for use with UK authorities.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Fang audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Fang translation

Before paying for written Fang, ask whether the reader will be able to use it. Schooling in all three countries is in Spanish or French, so many fluent Fang speakers have rarely read their own language. For a leaflet or a letter, a Spanish or French version, or an interpreter who reads the text aloud in Fang, often reaches the reader better. If Fang is still right, say which country the reader comes from so the spelling looks familiar.

Fang court and police interpreters

Fang may be needed at a magistrates' court, an immigration and asylum tribunal, a family hearing or a police station, and each time the interpreter has to be available on a date the court sets. Our first choice is a Fang interpreter who has worked in legal settings before, and, if any Fang interpreters hold them, we give priority to the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or a listing on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). If no qualified Fang interpreter is free, raise it with the court early; a video link may be the answer, where the court allows it.

Fang interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Fang interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Fang interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Fang interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Fang translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Fang interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Fang interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
