Bubi interpreting services

Most Bubi speakers who reach the UK are bilingual, and the interpreting plan should start from that. Ask two things when you book: which language the client prefers for formal matters, and which one they use when they are tired, ill or upset. Those are not always the same. A hospital consultation or a witness statement is the kind of situation where the home language comes back.

Consecutive interpreting works best, a few sentences at a time with room to check. When no Bubi interpreter is free, one option is relay: a Bubi and Spanish speaker works alongside a Spanish and English interpreter. It takes longer and needs planning, so it suits a scheduled interview better than an emergency.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Bubi interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Bubi translation

Almost every document a person brings from Equatorial Guinea is written in Spanish: identity cards, civil registry certificates, school and university papers, court records. So the translation you need is nearly always Spanish to English, even when the person's own language is Bubi. Each of our translators works into their native language, which means a native English speaker writes the English version.

Names on these documents follow Spanish habits and can run to several parts, sometimes mixing Spanish given names with Bubi ones. We copy them letter for letter as they appear on the passport, and flag any record where the order or spelling differs, before the certified translation goes to a UK authority.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Bubi audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Bubi translation

Written Bubi has a small readership. Few people had the chance to learn to read it at school, where the teaching was in Spanish, so a leaflet in Bubi may reach fewer readers than the same leaflet in Spanish. For information that has to be understood, such as medical advice or a tenancy letter, we usually suggest Spanish, or an interpreter reading the English aloud in Bubi. If you do want Bubi text, tell us who will read it and we will say honestly what is possible.

Bubi court and police interpreters

In a UK courtroom the difficulty with Bubi is supply, not skill. For legal work we look for Bubi interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Bubi, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). In practice those credentials are very unlikely to exist for this language. A qualified Spanish legal interpreter is the usual alternative, used with the defendant's or witness's agreement, and the court should check at the outset that the person follows the Spanish being used.

Bubi interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Bubi interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Bubi interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Bubi interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Bubi translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Bubi interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Bubi interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
