Catalan interpreting services
When you book, the useful question is where the speaker grew up. The three main varieties understand each other without effort, but a Mallorcan or a Valencian will feel more at ease with an interpreter who does not sound like a television newsreader from Barcelona, and for a long session that ease shows in the answers. Speakers switch into Spanish mid-sentence, especially for numbers and technical terms, so a Catalan interpreter needs strong Spanish as well.
Consecutive interpreting suits most appointments. Because Catalan interpreters are spread thinly across Britain, a remote interpreter on video is often the practical way to get the right dialect match rather than simply the nearest person.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Catalan interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Catalan translation
Much of what arrives from Catalonia is written in Catalan: university degree certificates and transcripts, school records, letters from the Generalitat and many health reports. Civil registries there can issue birth, marriage and death certificates in Catalan, in Spanish or in both, and documents from Andorra are normally in Catalan alone. Our translators translate into their native language, so the certified English version for a UK employer, university or the Home Office is written by a native English speaker.
Catalan spelling carries marks that English keyboards drop: the grave and acute accents, the cedilla in plaça, and the raised dot in paral·lel. We keep every one in personal and place names, following the passport.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Catalan audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Catalan translation
Written Catalan has two recognised standards, one maintained by the Institut d'Estudis Catalans in Barcelona and one by the Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua in Valencia. For readers in Catalonia, Andorra or the Balearics we use the first; for a company, council or court in the Valencian Community we follow the second and call the language Valencian. The choice shows in word forms and verb endings, and readers notice it.
Catalan court and police interpreters
Catalan comes up in UK legal work when the evidence itself is Catalan: a contract drafted in Barcelona, a notarial deed, a judgment from a court in Catalonia, or witness evidence from someone whose Spanish is weaker than their Catalan. For hearings and solicitor meetings we look for Catalan interpreters with legal experience and, where anyone holds them for Catalan, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Where no such interpreter is free, we tell you plainly and suggest a qualified Spanish legal interpreter only if the client agrees that Spanish will serve.
How to book a Catalan interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Catalan language
Catalan is a Romance language, spoken mainly in Catalonia, Valencia and the Balearic Islands in Spain, Andorra, and Roussillon in France. It is the official language of Andorra and co-official with Spanish in Catalonia, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands.
Catalan is written in the Latin alphabet. Varieties include Central Catalan, Valencian and Balearic.
Before you book: Valencian is the name used for Catalan in the Valencian Community. Its written standard differs from Catalonia's only in details, but official bodies there expect it.

Catalan interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Catalan interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Catalan interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Catalan interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Does the Catalan dialect matter when booking an interpreter?
It can. Catalan varieties include Central Catalan, Valencian and Balearic. Tell us where the speaker is from, or the dialect they use, so the interpreter is a good match for them.
Can you certify Catalan translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Catalan interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Catalan interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
