Basque interpreting services

Because Basque stands alone, with no neighbour to borrow understanding from, an interpreter cannot get by on a related language; they need real fluency. Most younger speakers learned the unified standard, Euskara Batua, at school, while many older people speak a regional dialect first: Biscayan in the west, Gipuzkoan in the centre, Navarrese, and on the French side the dialects of Lapurdi, Lower Navarre and Soule. Ask the speaker which province they come from and whether they are more comfortable in Batua.

Consecutive interpreting is usual. Since interpreters are scarce here, video from the Basque Country itself is a practical option.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Basque interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Basque translation

Official documents from the Basque Country, and some from Navarre, are frequently bilingual, with Basque and Spanish side by side, which helps when checking a translation. Some papers are Basque only: local council letters, school reports, research, and publications of the Basque Government, Eusko Jaurlaritza. Our translators each translate into their native language, and certified English translations are prepared for UK courts, universities and government departments.

Keep an eye on names. Given names such as Iñaki, Itziar or Garazi and surnames spelt the Basque way should match the passport exactly, and if an older document uses a Spanish spelling we note the difference instead of silently correcting it.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Basque audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Basque translation

For almost any readership, translate into Batua, the standard set by Euskaltzaindia, the Royal Academy of the Basque Language. It is what readers in Spain and France learned to read at school, so a leaflet or a web page in Batua reaches the widest audience. Dialect writing belongs only to material aimed at one community, such as oral history or local heritage work.

Basque court and police interpreters

Basque turns up in British legal settings through family matters, property and inheritance in the Basque Country, business contracts and occasionally criminal proceedings. We look for Basque interpreters who have legal experience and, where anyone holds them for this language, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Qualified legal interpreters for Basque are very few, so we say so at once if we cannot find one, and discuss with you whether Spanish or French would give the client a fair hearing.

How to book a Basque interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Basque interpreters near you

Britain has an old tie with Basque. In May 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the SS Habana landed nearly 4,000 Basque children at Southampton, and some of them stayed for life. Their families' memories and papers are still being collected, and that archive work is one of the places where Basque translation is needed in the UK today.

Basque interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Basque interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Basque interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Basque interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Basque translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Basque interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Basque interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
