Cambodian interpreting services
Booking under "Cambodian" is fine: the interpreter will speak Khmer, the national language. What is worth adding to the request is the client's age and the part of Cambodia they grew up in. Rural speakers and older people use words and sayings that a younger, city-educated interpreter hears less often, and a good match saves time. Many Cambodians have worked in Thailand for long spells and picked up some Thai, but that is no reason to book a Thai interpreter.
Conversations about family history, land or loss take longer than a routine appointment, because long personal accounts interpreted consecutively cannot be rushed, so allow for that. A telephone interpreter is fine for a short call; video lets the interpreter see gestures and any paperwork on the table.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Cambodian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Cambodian translation
The Cambodian paperwork we see for UK use includes birth and marriage certificates, identity cards, household registration records, school certificates and bank statements. Our translators only ever work into their native language, so a Cambodian certificate is put into English by a native English speaker. Financial papers often show amounts in both riel and US dollars, and the translation keeps both currencies exactly as written instead of converting them. Where original records were lost in the 1970s, a replacement certificate may carry an estimated date or have been issued decades after the event. The translation reproduces what the certificate says, issue date included, so the reader can see what kind of record it is.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Cambodian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Cambodian translation
When a UK service writes to Cambodian families in their own language, the reader may be a parent whose schooling was cut short by years of upheaval, or a young adult who studied at university in Phnom Penh. Aim the Khmer at the first of these: short sentences, everyday polite words, and terms such as "social worker" or "tenancy" explained rather than simply borrowed. Where a letter asks the family to act, a phone call with an interpreter often gets through better than paper alone, and we can arrange both.
Cambodian court and police interpreters
Cambodian interpreting in UK legal work covers immigration, family and housing matters, and at times criminal cases. For court and tribunal bookings our search starts with Cambodian interpreters who have legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Khmer, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Legal ideas with no neat Khmer equivalent, such as bail, a police caution or a consent order, need explaining and not just naming, so allow the interpreter time to do it. Where the court agrees, video lets an interpreter from another part of the country take part.
How to book a Cambodian interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Cambodian language
Cambodian is another name for Khmer, the national language of Cambodia. See also our Khmer interpreter and translator page.
Khmer is an Austroasiatic language, spoken mainly in Cambodia. It is the official language of Cambodia.
Khmer is written in the Khmer script.
Before you book: Unlike Thai, Lao and Vietnamese, Khmer is not tonal. Khmer names are romanised in several different ways, so send us the passport spelling of any name for a certified translation.

Cambodian interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Cambodian interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Cambodian interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Cambodian interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Cambodian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Khmer is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.
Do you provide Cambodian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Cambodian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
