Tama interpreting services
Tama is a Nilo-Saharan language of Dar Tama, the area around Guéréda in eastern Chad, and of neighbouring parts of West and South Darfur. Its two dialects, northern and southern, are close enough to cause no trouble. The related Taman languages are a different case: Mararit and Miisiirii, the latter also known as Abu Sharib, are spoken nearby and are not the same language, so confirm which one the person speaks before we book.
Almost all interpreting in Tama is consecutive and in person or by video. Where no direct Tama and English interpreter can be found, relay interpreting through Arabic is possible, but every extra step adds room for error, so it should be agreed openly and noted on the record.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Tama interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Tama translation
Tama is mainly a spoken language, and documents in Tama are uncommon. What people actually bring is paperwork from the state: in Chad that is issued in French or Arabic, the two official languages, and in Sudan in Arabic. Identity cards, school certificates, medical notes and court summonses all fall into this group, and we translate them from the language they are written in, with each translator translating into their native language.
Names need care because they pass through Arabic before reaching English, so one person can appear as Abdallah, Abdalla or Abdulla across different papers. We follow the passport or Home Office spelling and point out any mismatch.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Tama audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Tama translation
Written material in Tama will reach few readers, because most Tama speakers learnt to read, if at all, in Arabic or French. For information that has to be understood, such as a tenancy notice or a hospital discharge plan, an Arabic translation combined with a Tama interpreter who goes through it in person usually works far better than a Tama text.
Tama court and police interpreters
Tama speakers most often need an interpreter in immigration and asylum appeals, and sometimes in criminal or family courts. The account given, about a village, an attack or a journey, has to be interpreted exactly, uncertainty included. We try to find a Tama interpreter who has worked in legal settings before, preferably one holding the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), if any such interpreter exists for Tama. Those credentials are scarce for this language, so a court should allow time for the search and may need to accept a video link.
How to book a Tama interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Tama interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Tama interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Tama interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Tama interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Tama translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Tama interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Tama interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
