Tajik interpreting services

Tajik has four main dialect groups. The northern ones, spoken in northern Tajikistan and in Samarkand and Bukhara, show the influence of Uzbek, most of all in Bukhara; the southern ones include the speech of Kulob, which politicians and broadcasters now use, so it is the Tajik most clients hear on the news. A client from the north may therefore use Uzbek words that a southern interpreter has to think about, and the reverse is also true. Consecutive interpreting suits almost every Tajik appointment, and with so few interpreters in Britain, a video link is often how the right one reaches you.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Tajik interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Tajik translation

Tajik has been written in Cyrillic since 1940, after roughly twelve years in a Latin alphabet and centuries in the Perso-Arabic script before that. Its Cyrillic alphabet has six letters that Russian lacks, and many older documents give names in Russian spelling, so one name can appear as Jamshed on one paper and Dzhamshed on another. We follow the passport and list any variants we find. Papers from the Soviet period are often in Russian, and we translate those as well.

Each translator works into their native language: a native English speaker for Tajik to English, a native Tajik speaker for English to Tajik.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Tajik audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Tajik translation

For readers from Tajikistan or Uzbekistan, translate into standard Tajik in Cyrillic. A 1989 language law called for a gradual return to the Perso-Arabic script, but Cyrillic stayed in everyday use, and a leaflet in Arabic letters would lose most readers from Tajikistan. For modern terms we use the words readers there actually use, which are sometimes Russian loans. For Tajiks from Afghanistan, translate into Dari instead.

Tajik court and police interpreters

Tajik legal interpreting is needed rarely enough in the UK that it pays to plan ahead. The interpreter we look for has legal experience and, where one can be found, the DPSI (Law) or a place on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). If no suitable Tajik interpreter is available, a Russian interpreter may be an option, but only if the client understands Russian well enough to give evidence in it and agrees to it, and the court is told. A remote interpreter on a video link is often the quickest way to get the right person to a hearing.

Tajik interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Tajik interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Tajik interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Tajik interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Tajik translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Tajik is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Tajik interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Tajik interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
