Tabedawie interpreting services

Most Beja speakers live in Sudan, but around 121,000 live in Eritrea and some 88,000 in Egypt, and the language's main dialects take their names from the groups who speak them. Tell us the client's country and, if you know it, their group, and whether they also speak Arabic or Tigre.

Interpreting is consecutive. Allow more time than usual: the only Beja interpreter available may be joining remotely, and a client telling a difficult story in their own language should not be hurried. At a first meeting, a few minutes of introductions lets the client hear that the interpreter really does speak Beja, which can put a nervous client at ease before the questions start.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Tabedawie interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Tabedawie translation

Beja has no settled spelling. The Eritrean government uses a Latin orthography, while in Sudan several ways of writing it in Arabic letters have been tried without one taking hold, so a text in Beja can look quite different depending on who wrote it. Most documents a Beja-speaking client brings, such as certificates, school records and court papers, are not in Beja at all, and our translators, each working into their native language, translate them into English from the language they are written in. Names need care: a name heard in Beja at interview may be spelt differently on an Arabic certificate, and we follow the official document.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Tabedawie audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Tabedawie translation

Translating into Beja for readers in the UK is seldom the best use of a budget, because few readers are used to seeing their language in print. If a written version is needed for an Eritrean reader, use the Latin spelling the Eritrean government uses; for a Sudanese reader, ask first which script they would expect. For most purposes a recorded message in Beja will be understood more fully.

Tabedawie court and police interpreters

In a criminal trial, a family case or an immigration appeal, a Beja speaker who gives evidence through Arabic may say less than they would in their own language. For legal bookings we look for Beja interpreters with legal experience and, if any exist for this language, one holding the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registered with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). There may be none. In that case we will tell you before the hearing, so the court can decide between a remote Beja interpreter and a Sudanese Arabic one with the client's agreement.

Tabedawie interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Tabedawie interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Tabedawie interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Tabedawie interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Tabedawie translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Tabedawie interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Tabedawie interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
