Slovak interpreting services
Standard Slovak was built on the dialects of central Slovakia, and that is the Slovak of television, school and officialdom. The dialects of the east sound noticeably different: the stress falls on the second-last syllable, as in Polish, rather than on the first. A professional interpreter understands them, but it helps to say if the speaker is from the Košice or Prešov regions, particularly for a long interview.
Home language is the other thing to settle. Families from southern Slovakia may be more at ease in Hungarian, and many Roma families in the east use Romani with each other and Slovak with officials. Consecutive interpreting suits most appointments; for a training session or a works meeting with several Slovak staff, whispered simultaneous interpreting can save a lot of time.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Slovak interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Slovak translation
The Slovak documents we see most are birth and marriage certificates (rodný list, sobášny list), criminal record extracts, school leaving certificates from the maturita exam, university diplomas, payslips and medical reports. Slovak civil documents often carry the rodné číslo, a personal birth number, and we reproduce it exactly. Each translator works into their native language, so a native English speaker translates Slovak into English for UK use.
Names keep their diacritics in a certified translation, even if a British bank or employer has already dropped them, and we note both forms where that avoids confusion. Dates are written day first with full stops, which we convert to the usual UK format.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Slovak audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Slovak translation
English to Slovak is handled by native Slovak translators, in standard written Slovak, never Czech passed off as close enough. For health and safety notices, tenancy letters and school information, we keep the wording plain and check that job titles, UK benefits and NHS services are explained rather than left as English terms a Slovak reader will not recognise.
Slovak court and police interpreters
Slovak interpreters are regularly needed in British magistrates' and Crown Courts, family courts and employment tribunals, and in police stations for the interviews that come before them. For this work we look for Slovak interpreters with real legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Slovak, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Where a Slovak national is more comfortable in Romani or Hungarian, raise it before the hearing so the right interpreter is booked from the outset.
How to book a Slovak interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Slovak language
Slovak is a West Slavic language, close to Czech. It is spoken mainly in Slovakia. Slovak is the official language of Slovakia and an official language of the European Union.
Slovak is written in the Latin alphabet, with diacritics.
At the 2021 Census, 49,924 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Slovak as their main language. The local authorities with the most were Bradford (3,227 people), Sheffield (3,140) and Derby (2,285). Source: Office for National Statistics.
Before you book: Some Slovak citizens speak Romani or Hungarian at home, so it is worth asking which language the person is most comfortable in.

Slovak interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Slovak interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Slovak interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Slovak interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Slovak translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Slovak interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Slovak interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
How many people speak Slovak in the UK?
At the 2021 Census, 49,924 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Slovak as their main language. The local authorities with the most were Bradford (3,227 people), Sheffield (3,140) and Derby (2,285). The census asked for each person's main language, so people who speak Slovak at home but gave English as their main language are not in that figure. Scotland and Northern Ireland count languages in their own censuses.
