Sicilian interpreting services

Sicilian is not one uniform speech. Palermo and the west sound noticeably different from Catania and Messina in the east, and the varieties of southern Calabria and the Salento in Apulia differ again. Most speakers slide between Sicilian and Italian in the same conversation, often in the same sentence, so the interpreter you want is someone who grew up with both and can follow the switch without stopping the flow.

Consecutive interpreting suits nearly every booking, and with older clients it pays to allow extra time. Tell us the speaker's home town and roughly when they left Sicily: the Sicilian of someone who emigrated sixty years ago keeps words that younger people on the island no longer use.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Sicilian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Sicilian translation

Official documents from Sicily are in Italian, not Sicilian. A birth certificate or marriage record comes from the Comune in standard Italian and needs an Italian translator, and we will route it that way. Sicilian text comes to us in other forms: family letters, poems and songs, recipes and notebooks, and transcripts of speech. There is no single spelling system that every writer follows, so the translator has to read the dialect as it is written, not as a dictionary expects it.

Each of our translators translates into their native language, so Sicilian material is put into English by a native English speaker with a firm grasp of the dialect. Names are a small trap: a man known to everyone as Turi appears on paper as Salvatore, and we keep the official form, noting the familiar one where it helps.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Sicilian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Sicilian translation

Translation from English into Sicilian is rare, and for anything practical, such as a care plan, a council letter or a hospital leaflet, standard Italian is the better choice because almost every Sicilian reads it comfortably. Sicilian makes sense for heritage and personal projects: a family history, a memorial reading, words for a wedding. For those, tell us which part of Sicily the family comes from, so the wording sounds like home.

Sicilian court and police interpreters

Most Sicilians in UK legal proceedings are well served by an Italian interpreter, but a Sicilian speaker is the better choice for a witness who struggles with standard Italian or where recorded speech in dialect forms part of the evidence. When we are asked for Sicilian in a legal setting we look for interpreters who have worked in legal settings and, where interpreters holding them exist for Sicilian, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI); in practice any such credential will be for Italian, held by an interpreter who also grew up speaking Sicilian. With the court's agreement, the interpreter can attend by video.

Sicilian interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Sicilian interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Sicilian interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Sicilian interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Sicilian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Sicilian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Sicilian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
