Oromigna interpreting services

A referral that says Oromigna was usually written by someone who heard the name in Amharic, perhaps from a relative or an earlier interpreter, so the client may already have been through one appointment in the wrong language. Ask at the start, in Oromo, whether they are comfortable. Tell us which part of Ethiopia, or of Kenya, the person grew up in and whether they also speak Amharic, Somali or Swahili, and we will match the interpreter to the way they actually speak.

Women giving evidence about domestic abuse or sexual violence may speak more freely to a woman interpreter, so say when you book and we will do our best to arrange one.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Oromigna interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Oromigna translation

Documents written in Oromo nowadays use Latin letters, but older printed Oromo, including some religious books, used the Ethiopic script, and a family may bring either. Many papers from Ethiopia are in Amharic even when the holder speaks Oromo at home, so we check the language of each page before quoting. Our translators each work into their native language, and a certified English translation is prepared for use with UK solicitors, universities, employers and government departments.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Oromigna audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Oromigna translation

When you commission a translation for Oromo readers, label it Afaan Oromoo on the cover and in any language menu, not Oromigna: readers look for their own name for the language, and some will pass over a leaflet carrying the Amharic one. The text itself should be written in standard Qubee spelling, with long vowels doubled as readers expect.

Oromigna court and police interpreters

If a court list or tribunal notice records the language as Oromigna, the interpreter required is an Oromo interpreter; there is no separate qualification under the Amharic name. For solicitors' conferences and statement-taking we look for Oromo interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for the language, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Correcting the language name on the file early saves an adjourned hearing later.

How to book an Oromigna interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Oromigna language

Oromigna is the Amharic name for Oromo; speakers call their language Afaan Oromoo. See also our Oromo interpreter and translator page.

Oromo is a Cushitic language of the Afroasiatic family, spoken mainly in Ethiopia, above all the Oromia Region, and northern Kenya. It is the working language of Ethiopia's Oromia Region.

Oromo is written in the Latin alphabet, called Qubee.

Before you book: Oromo is Ethiopia's most widely spoken first language, and it is written in Latin letters rather than the Ethiopic script used for Amharic. Ask whether the person prefers Oromo or Amharic rather than assuming.

Oromigna interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book an Oromigna interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Oromigna interpreters work nearby.

How much does an Oromigna interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Oromigna translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Oromigna interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match an Oromigna interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
