Oriya interpreting services

Odia changes across the state. Linguists describe a northern variety around Balasore, the central speech of the Cuttack area, Ganjami in the south, Desia in Koraput in the south-west, and Sambalpuri in the west, which its own speakers usually regard as a separate language; one survey found it shares about three-quarters of its basic vocabulary with standard Odia. A professional interpreter follows most regional speech, but for a long or sensitive appointment tell us the district so we can look for a close match. Consecutive interpreting, a few sentences at a time, suits most settings, and video brings in interpreters from further away.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Oriya interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Oriya translation

Each of our Odia translators translates into their native language: native English speakers turn Odia documents into English, and native Odia speakers handle English into Odia. Papers from Odisha may be in Odia, in English or in both. Odia has its own digits as well as its own script, so in the English version we give every figure and date in ordinary numerals, checked against the original. Names are transliterated to match the passport, because the same Odia name can be romanised in more than one way, and certified translations for the Home Office, courts or universities carry our signed certification.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Oriya audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Oriya translation

Write for Odia readers in standard written Odia, the form newspapers and the state government use. Sambalpuri is written in the Odia script as well, so a reader from the west can usually follow a standard text even though they would say things differently. Keep the English plain, avoid idioms that have no Odia equivalent, and tell us who the readers are: a leaflet for older patients needs a different tone from a letter to university students.

Oriya court and police interpreters

Odia interpreters with courtroom experience are hard to find in the UK, so raise the need as soon as a hearing is listed, and ask the court early whether a remote interpreter would be acceptable. We look for Odia interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Odia, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Police interviews need the same care: the interview record should note the language used and whether the person was comfortable in it.

Oriya interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book an Oriya interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Oriya interpreters work nearby.

How much does an Oriya interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Oriya translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Odia is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Oriya interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match an Oriya interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
