Mongolian interpreting services
Standard Mongolian in Mongolia is built on Khalkha, the speech of the central and eastern country, and it is what most interpreters use. Speakers from the west of Mongolia, from the Buryat areas along the Russian border or from Inner Mongolia sound different and draw on different loanwords: Russian in Ulaanbaatar, Chinese south of the border. Most can follow Khalkha, but for a mental health assessment or a police interview it is worth telling us which region the person comes from.
Mongolian marks respect in its pronouns, with a polite "ta" for elders and strangers and a familiar "chi" for friends and children. Interpreters default to the polite form with adults, which matters more than you might think to an older client who has just been addressed by a doctor half their age.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Mongolian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Mongolian translation
Each of our translators works into their native language, so Mongolian certificates are translated into English by a native English speaker who reads Mongolian. From January 2025 Mongolia began issuing official papers such as ID cards, birth and marriage certificates and diplomas in both Cyrillic and the traditional script, so newer documents carry two versions of the same text. The ten-character civil registration number, two letters then eight digits encoding date of birth and sex, is copied exactly.
Clan names were suppressed under the communist government and only required again from the late 1990s, by which time many families had lost track of theirs and had to choose one. Older papers may not show it at all. Clients from Inner Mongolia usually bring Chinese-language documents, which we translate from Chinese.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Mongolian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Mongolian translation
For readers from Mongolia itself, write in Cyrillic: it is what they learned at school and use on their phones, whatever the new rules on official papers say. For a reader from Inner Mongolia, Cyrillic may be unfamiliar, and the choice is between the vertical script and Chinese. Tell us who the text is for, and we will advise before we quote.
Mongolian court and police interpreters
A Mongolian speaker may need an interpreter at a police station, a tribunal or an immigration appeal, and a hearing can stall for want of an interpreter who has done this work before. For any legal booking we try to find a Mongolian interpreter who knows court procedure, and we give priority to anyone holding the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registered with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), where such interpreters exist for Mongolian. Tell us early if a witness or defendant is from Inner Mongolia, so the interpreter's vocabulary suits them.
How to book a Mongolian interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Mongolian language
Mongolian is a Mongolic language, spoken mainly in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia in China. It is the official language of Mongolia.
Mongolian is written in the Cyrillic alphabet in Mongolia and the traditional vertical Mongolian script in Inner Mongolia.
Before you book: Mongolians often use a patronymic in place of a surname, and the Cyrillic spelling can be romanised in different ways, so give us passport spellings for any certified translation.

Mongolian interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Mongolian interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Mongolian interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Mongolian interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Mongolian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Mongolian is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.
Do you provide Mongolian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Mongolian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
