Luganda interpreting services

The name itself is a small grammar lesson. In Luganda the prefix changes the meaning of the root ganda: a Muganda is one person, the Baganda are the people, Buganda is the kingdom and Luganda is the language. Speech from Kampala and the Buganda heartland is the standard that most speakers understand. Luganda is a tonal language, and length matters too, in both vowels and consonants, so a word said slightly short can become a different word. An interpreter who grew up with it hears those distinctions without thinking.

Consecutive interpreting works best, especially for witness statements and medical histories. Luganda speakers commonly switch into English for technical terms, and a good interpreter follows the switch rather than stopping to translate English back into English.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Luganda interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Luganda translation

Ugandan civil documents, including birth certificates, the national identity card (known in Luganda as Ndaga Muntu), school certificates and court papers, are issued in English, so they rarely need translating. The Luganda work we see is different: letters and messages used as evidence in asylum and family cases, recorded phone calls, church and community letters, and statements that need a transcript as well as a translation. Every translator works into their native language, which for Luganda into English means a native English translator checks the final version.

Watch double letters in names. Luganda spelling writes long consonants twice, as in Ssemakula or Nnakato, and a clerk in Britain may drop the second letter. We follow the passport and point out any document that differs.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Luganda audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Luganda translation

Write in the Luganda of Kampala and keep sentences short. Health leaflets and council letters read naturally when they use the English loanwords Ugandans already say, such as the names of medicines, rather than inventing a Luganda term nobody recognises. Formal letters in Luganda open with respectful greetings, and a flat, direct English opening can seem cold; our translators adjust the tone without changing the content.

Luganda court and police interpreters

Luganda legal bookings tend to involve immigration and asylum tribunals, though family and criminal courts ask for it too. For legal work we look for Luganda interpreters with experience of hearings and, where interpreters holding them exist for Luganda, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Because qualified interpreters are few, courts outside London should ask early about a video link.

Luganda interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Luganda interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Luganda interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Luganda interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Luganda translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Luganda interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Luganda interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.

How many people speak Luganda in the UK?

At the 2021 Census, 2,148 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Luganda as their main language. The local authorities with the most were the London borough of Croydon (165 people), the London borough of Newham (123) and the London borough of Enfield (91). The census asked for each person's main language, so people who speak Luganda at home but gave English as their main language are not in that figure. Scotland and Northern Ireland count languages in their own censuses.
