Lomwe interpreting services
In Malawi, Lomwe country lies in the south: districts such as Mulanje, Thyolo and Phalombe. In Mozambique it is spoken mainly in Zambezia province. Many Malawian Lomwe families switched to Chichewa over the twentieth century, so younger Malawians of Lomwe background may understand Lomwe well but speak Chichewa more easily. Ask the person which language they think in, not which people they belong to.
Consecutive interpreting suits Lomwe best, and a video link is usually the only realistic way to reach a qualified interpreter. When nobody can be found, relay interpreting through Chichewa or Portuguese is possible, but it doubles the chances of meaning slipping, so keep sentences short and allow twice the time.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Lomwe interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Lomwe translation
Paperwork rarely needs translating from Lomwe itself. Malawian birth certificates, passports and court papers are issued in English, and Mozambican ones in Portuguese; we can provide certified English translations of the Portuguese documents. What does come to us in Lomwe is personal: handwritten letters, text and voice messages, and recorded statements used as evidence. As always, each translator works into their native language, so the English version is written by a native English speaker working with a Lomwe-speaking linguist where needed.
Spellings of names and villages vary, because Lomwe has no single spelling everyone was taught at school. We copy names as they appear in the passport and list any variants in a note.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Lomwe audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Lomwe translation
Before commissioning written Lomwe, ask whether the reader can read it. Many Lomwe speakers learned to read in Chichewa, Portuguese or English rather than in Lomwe, so a recorded audio version, or a text in their school language with an interpreter to go through it, may serve them better. Where Lomwe text is the right answer, we keep the wording plain and check it with a speaker from the reader's country.
Lomwe court and police interpreters
A Lomwe interpreter in a British courtroom is unusual, and when one is needed the case is often an asylum appeal or a family matter heard at short notice. We look for Lomwe interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Lomwe, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI); for a language this rare, such credentials may not be available, and we say so. Ask the tribunal early whether it will accept a video link.
How to book a Lomwe interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.

Lomwe interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Lomwe interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Lomwe interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Lomwe interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Lomwe translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Lomwe interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Lomwe interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
