Lithuanian interpreting services

Almost everyone who grew up in Lithuania speaks the standard language, which makes matching an interpreter simpler than for many languages. Two things are still worth telling us. First, whether the speaker is from the Vilnius region, where many families are Polish-speaking and may be more at home in Polish or Russian than in Lithuanian. Second, the setting: Lithuanian legal and medical vocabulary is exact, and an interpreter used to family proceedings or mental health assessments will render it with more confidence than a generalist.

For a GP call or a short council query, telephone interpreting works well. Child protection meetings, tribunal hearings and anything involving distress are better handled in person, where the interpreter can see who is speaking and manage turn-taking.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Lithuanian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Lithuanian translation

Lithuanian clients bring us birth, marriage and divorce certificates, school records, court orders on custody and maintenance, powers of attorney for selling a flat back home, and payslips or tax papers for mortgage applications. Each translator works into their own native language, so English versions are written by native English translators. We certify translations for the Home Office, HM Courts and Tribunals Service, universities and lenders.

Lithuanian documents carry an eleven-digit personal code, the asmens kodas, whose first digit shows sex and century of birth and whose next six give the date of birth, a useful cross-check against the dates elsewhere on the page. Dates in Lithuanian documents are normally written year first, 2021-03-05 style.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Lithuanian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Lithuanian translation

Write for standard Lithuanian readers and keep the polite Jūs form in anything addressed to the public. Lithuanian is heavily inflected, so text squeezed into a fixed layout (a form field, a sign, an app button) often needs more room than the English and a different word order. Send us the layout with the text; a translation that reads well in a table can look broken once cut to fit.

Lithuanian court and police interpreters

With a community of this size, Lithuanian comes up regularly in criminal cases, care proceedings and extradition hearings. For every legal assignment we look for Lithuanian interpreters with courtroom experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Lithuanian, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Where a Lithuanian judgment or police record is part of the evidence, book its certified translation early; a hearing can be adjourned while one is awaited.

How to book a Lithuanian interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Before you book: Lithuanian surnames change with gender and marital status (Kazlauskas, Kazlauskienė, Kazlauskaitė), so check that names on a translation match the passport exactly.

Lithuanian interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Lithuanian interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Lithuanian interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Lithuanian interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Lithuanian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Lithuanian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Lithuanian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.

How many people speak Lithuanian in the UK?

At the 2021 Census, 119,656 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Lithuanian as their main language. The local authorities with the most were Peterborough (6,720 people), the London borough of Newham (4,813) and the London borough of Barking and Dagenham (4,427). The census asked for each person's main language, so people who speak Lithuanian at home but gave English as their main language are not in that figure. Scotland and Northern Ireland count languages in their own censuses.
