Lingala interpreting services
Lingala interpreting is nearly always consecutive, with the professional and the client taking turns. Two things are worth knowing before you book. First, family words stretch further than English ones: a Congolese speaker may call a paternal uncle "papa" and a mother's sister "mama", and a family tree drawn up for an immigration case can go badly wrong if nobody asks who exactly is meant. Second, Lingala is spoken on both banks of the Congo River, and a speaker from Brazzaville may use different expressions from one raised in Kinshasa. Tell us which side the client comes from and whether French is comfortable for them, and we will match the interpreter to both.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Lingala interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Lingala translation
Official papers from the DRC, such as birth and marriage certificates, school diplomas and court judgments, are issued in French, so most Congolese certificates we certify are French to English work. Names need care: a Congolese record usually shows the family name, then a postnom, then the first name, and UK forms have no box for the middle one. We follow the order in the passport and flag any document that disagrees.
Lingala itself comes to us as letters, text messages and voice notes, often needed as evidence. Written Lingala has two extra vowel letters, an open e and an open o, which people typing on a phone usually leave out, so the translator reads for context. As with all our work, the translator is translating into their own native language, so English versions are done by native English speakers.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Lingala audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Lingala translation
For UK readers we write a plain, standard Lingala and keep Kinshasa street slang out of it, while leaving in the French loanwords people actually use for things like the hospital or the town hall. Schooling in the Congo is mostly in French, so some adults read French more easily than written Lingala. For an important letter it can be worth sending both versions; ask us and we will quote for each.
Lingala court and police interpreters
Lingala comes up in UK courts and tribunals mainly in asylum appeals, family proceedings and criminal cases involving Congolese defendants or witnesses. For legal bookings we look for Lingala interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Lingala, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). We also want an interpreter who can follow French legal terms, as a witness may quote a Congolese police report or judgment in French.
How to book a Lingala interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Lingala language
Lingala is a Bantu language, spoken mainly in Kinshasa and the north-west of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the Republic of the Congo. It is one of the four national languages of the DRC.
Lingala is written in the Latin alphabet.
At the 2021 Census, 5,492 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Lingala as their main language. The local authorities with the most were the London borough of Enfield (542 people), the London borough of Hackney (311) and the London borough of Haringey (290). Source: Office for National Statistics.
Before you book: Lingala is the language of Kinshasa and of Congolese music, and many Congolese in the UK speak it alongside French. People from eastern Congo are more likely to speak Swahili.

Lingala interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Lingala interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Lingala interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Lingala interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Lingala translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Lingala interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Lingala interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
How many people speak Lingala in the UK?
At the 2021 Census, 5,492 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Lingala as their main language. The local authorities with the most were the London borough of Enfield (542 people), the London borough of Hackney (311) and the London borough of Haringey (290). The census asked for each person's main language, so people who speak Lingala at home but gave English as their main language are not in that figure. Scotland and Northern Ireland count languages in their own censuses.
