Kannada interpreting services

Spoken Kannada is some way from the written language. Endings are clipped, words run together, and in the cities English words drop into almost every sentence. A good interpreter matches the speaker: plain everyday Kannada with a farmer's widow, a more formal register with a retired civil servant in a solicitor's office.

Plenty of Kannada speakers also know Hindi, Tamil, Telugu or English, but running a mental health assessment, a safeguarding interview or a consent discussion in someone's second language is a false economy. Consecutive interpreting suits nearly all Kannada work. With an older speaker who tires easily, build breaks into a long session.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Kannada interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Kannada translation

Kannada into English is done by a native English speaker, English into Kannada by a native Kannada speaker: every translator we use works into their own first language. Many Karnataka certificates are printed in both Kannada and English, yet the entries filled in by hand or typed on them are often in Kannada only, and those entries are what a UK office needs to read. Students and professionals bring the SSLC marks card from the tenth standard and the second-year PUC (pre-university) marks card. Property owners bring the RTC, the record of rights, tenancy and crops, now produced from the state's Bhoomi land records system.

Names are rendered exactly as the passport gives them, with a translator's note wherever a document uses initials, or the father's name, in place of a surname. The English translation is then certified for use by a UK organisation.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Kannada audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Kannada translation

For Kannada readers in the UK, write in the modern standard of Karnataka's newspapers and government notices, avoiding heavily Sanskritised vocabulary on one side and English spelt out in Kannada letters on the other, wherever a common Kannada word exists. A few everyday words such as bus or doctor are better left in English, because that is what readers say. Kannada has its own digits, but Western digits are normal in modern print, and we use them for dates, doses and phone numbers.

Kannada court and police interpreters

Kannada is needed in UK courts only occasionally, and when it is, finding the right interpreter can take longer than the listing allows, so tell the court and us as soon as a date is fixed. We aim for an interpreter with legal experience and, where a Kannada interpreter holding them can be found, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). If nobody suitable can attend in person, ask whether the court will accept an interpreter by video link.

Kannada interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Kannada interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Kannada interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Kannada interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Kannada translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Kannada is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Kannada interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Kannada interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
