Herero interpreting services

Start by asking where the speaker grew up. The Herero of central Namibia, the Mbanderu further east and across into Botswana, and the Himba in the dry north-west all speak forms of the same language, with differences of accent and vocabulary that a good interpreter handles without fuss. What does not work is swapping in a neighbouring language: Oshiwambo, the home language of the largest share of Namibians, is also Bantu but is a separate language, and an Oshiwambo interpreter is no substitute.

Most assignments are consecutive, with short turns. Because the interpreter will often be working remotely, send the paperwork in advance and allow a few extra minutes at the start for the three-way call to settle.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Herero interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Herero translation

Namibian birth, marriage and police clearance certificates are issued in English, so they seldom need translating at all. The Herero material that does reach us tends to be personal: handwritten letters, statements a client has written in their own language, and text messages or voice notes that a solicitor wants to use as evidence in a family or criminal case. Recordings are first transcribed, then translated, and we can certify the English version for a UK court or the Home Office.

Each translator translates into their native language, so Herero to English is done by a native English speaker. Names are copied exactly as the passport spells them, whatever the original letter used.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Herero audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Herero translation

Before paying for a translation into Herero, check that the reader reads it comfortably. Plenty of Namibians were schooled in English and Afrikaans and use Otjiherero mainly as a spoken language, so a written leaflet may reach fewer people than you hope. For an older reader, a short audio recording, or an interpreter reading the English document aloud in Herero, can work better. Where a written version is right, we use the standard spelling taught in Namibian schools.

Herero court and police interpreters

Legal work in Herero is occasional, and it tends to come up in family proceedings, asylum and immigration appeals, or where a witness wants to speak in their first language. We look for Herero interpreters who have worked in legal settings before, and we check for the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) and National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) registration wherever interpreters holding them exist for Herero. Honestly, such interpreters are very few, so for a hearing we ask early whether the court will accept a video link.

How to book a Herero interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.

Herero interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Herero interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Herero interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Herero interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Herero translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Herero interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Herero interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
