Guaragigna interpreting services
The name itself tells you something. The ending "-igna" is how Amharic names a language, as in Amarigna or Tigrigna, so Guaragigna simply means "the Gurage tongue" and says nothing about which variety a client speaks. When you book, tell us the client's home district if you know it, whether they read Amharic, and whether they would prefer a man or a woman. Expect some Amharic words mixed into the conversation, particularly from people raised in the capital; a good interpreter follows both without stopping the flow.
Almost all of this work is consecutive, with short turns, which suits a video call as well as a room. Because the pool of interpreters is small, remote interpreting is often what makes a booking possible at all.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Guaragigna interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Guaragigna translation
Guaragigna is mostly spoken rather than written, and the certificates, court papers and school records a Gurage client brings are normally in Amharic, sometimes with English alongside. So a Gurage client's documents usually go to an Amharic translator, and each translator translates into their native language, with Amharic to English work handled by a native English speaker. We prepare certified translations for Home Office applications, courts, universities and banks.
Two details need care. Names written in Ethiopic letters can be rendered in English several ways (Tesfaye or Tesfay, Gebre or Gabre), so we follow the passport spelling and point out any documents that disagree. Dates on Ethiopian papers use the Ethiopian calendar; we give the Gregorian equivalent and keep the original visible.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Guaragigna audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Guaragigna translation
For printed material, Guaragigna is rarely the best choice: many Gurage readers are more at home reading Amharic than reading their own language on paper, and spelling conventions for Gurage varieties are not settled. For older people who do not read comfortably, a recorded message or a spoken script in the right Gurage variety can reach them where a leaflet will not. Tell us who the audience is and we will advise which route works.
Guaragigna court and police interpreters
In a UK courtroom, Guaragigna cases are uncommon, and the realistic question is often whether the court needs a relay: Guaragigna into Amharic, then Amharic into English, with two interpreters. That should be agreed with the court before the hearing, not on the day. Our first choice for any legal booking is a Guaragigna interpreter with courtroom or solicitor experience who, if such a qualified interpreter exists for Guaragigna at all, holds the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or is on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Where no such interpreter exists, we tell the solicitor plainly.
How to book a Guaragigna interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Guaragigna interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book a Guaragigna interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Guaragigna interpreters work nearby.
How much does a Guaragigna interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Guaragigna translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Guragigna is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.
Do you provide Guaragigna interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Guaragigna interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
