Gagauz interpreting services

Most Gagauz adults grew up using three or four languages, and the right interpreter is the one in whichever language the person relies on when something serious is being said. For older people from the villages around Comrat, Ceadir-Lunga and Vulcanesti, that is often Gagauz, the language they think in. People educated in Russian-language schools may be equally comfortable in Russian, and a few prefer Romanian. Ask them directly, and ask again if the appointment turns difficult.

Gagauz interpreting is consecutive. Since there are so few Gagauz interpreters in Britain, a booking often pairs a remote Gagauz interpreter for the conversation with Russian or Romanian for the forms and letters.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Gagauz interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Gagauz translation

Documents from Gagauzia are Moldovan documents: birth and marriage certificates, school diplomas and court papers issued in Romanian, with older Soviet-era records in Russian. Gagauz speakers from Ukraine bring Ukrainian papers instead. We translate all of these into English, and each of our translators translates into their native language, so the English is written by a native English speaker.

The hard part is names. One Gagauz surname can appear as Чакир in Cyrillic, Ciachir in Romanian spelling and Çakır in the Latin Gagauz alphabet, which has followed the Turkish model since 1993, while Soviet-era papers add a Russian-style patronymic. We follow the passport and list the variants, so a caseworker can see they all belong to one person.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Gagauz audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Gagauz translation

Translation into Gagauz is uncommon, and it is worth thinking about the readers first. Many Gagauz adults went to school while the language was still written in Cyrillic, and read Russian more easily than the current Latin spelling. For a UK leaflet or letter, a Russian version often reaches more Gagauz readers than a Gagauz one, and Romanian suits people educated in Moldova's Romanian-language schools. If you do want Gagauz, we use the modern Latin alphabet and keep the wording close to everyday speech.

Gagauz court and police interpreters

Gagauz rarely comes up in UK courts, and when it does, the choice of language should be settled before the hearing. A defendant may cope in Russian for routine matters and still lose detail under cross-examination, which is when a Gagauz interpreter, joining by video if the court permits, is worth requesting. We seek interpreters with courtroom or police station experience. Holders of the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law), and interpreters on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), are who we look for first where any exist for Gagauz; if none do, we set out the interpreter's actual experience so the court can decide.

Gagauz interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Gagauz interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Gagauz interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Gagauz interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Gagauz translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Gagauz interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Gagauz interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
