Faroese interpreting services

Spoken Faroese changes noticeably from one island to the next, in vowels especially, yet islanders understand each other without difficulty and any competent interpreter will cope. Everyday speech carries a fair number of Danish loanwords, while formal and official Faroese leans the other way, towards native words. A speaker may slip into Danish for a technical term, and that's normal rather than a sign they would prefer a Danish interpreter.

Because so few Faroese interpreters exist anywhere, flexibility helps: a video appointment at a time the interpreter can make will almost always beat waiting for someone to travel. Consecutive interpreting, in short turns, suits the doctor's surgery and the solicitor's office alike.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Faroese interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Faroese translation

The Faroe Islands govern themselves within the Kingdom of Denmark, and islanders are Danish citizens. Their paperwork reflects that: some records, such as certificates and school documents, may be in Faroese, while others, including the passport, come from the Danish system. We translate from either language, so a family does not have to split its papers between two suppliers.

Each translator works into their native language, which for anything going to a UK authority means a native English speaker. Letters such as ð, ø, æ and the accented vowels are kept in names exactly as printed, and dates written in the day-month-year order are set out in full to avoid any mix-up. Translations are certified for use in the UK.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Faroese audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Faroese translation

Written Faroese is far more uniform than the spoken language, because its spelling was designed to sit above the dialects and serve all of them. That makes a single written version suitable for readers from any island. For a formal letter or patient leaflet, we write in standard Faroese and use native terms where they exist; if your reader is younger and used to Danish at work, tell us, as a plainer style may suit them better.

Faroese court and police interpreters

Legal work in Faroese is uncommon in the UK. It may arise after an accident, over a commercial dispute, or in a family case with one parent from the islands. When it does, we try to find Faroese interpreters with experience of courts or solicitors and, where interpreters holding them exist for Faroese, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or NRPSI registration (the National Register of Public Service Interpreters). If none is available, speak to the court early about a video link or about using Danish with the person's agreement.

How to book a Faroese interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

Faroese interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Faroese interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Faroese interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Faroese interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Faroese translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide Faroese interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Faroese interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
