Estonian interpreting services
Standard Estonian grew out of the northern dialects, and it is what schools, broadcasters and officials use. The south has varieties of its own, Võro and Seto among them, different enough that some linguists count Võro as a separate language. In practice nearly everyone who speaks them also speaks the standard, so an interpreter in standard Estonian will serve. The language has a polite form of "you", teie, alongside the familiar sina, and an interpreter addressing an older patient or a witness should use it.
Estonian sentences can pile case endings onto long compound nouns, and meaning often arrives at the end, so consecutive interpreting, a few sentences at a time, suits most meetings. Telephone and video work well for shorter appointments.
Face-to-face interpreting
The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.
Telephone interpreting
The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.
Video interpreting
A Estonian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.
We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.
Certified Estonian translation
Typical paperwork from Estonia includes birth and marriage certificates, extracts from the population register, school leaving certificates and university diplomas, driving licences, court decisions and employment records. Many Estonian documents are issued as digitally signed files rather than on paper, with the signature checked online instead of stamped; our translation sets out the content and describes the signature block, so a UK reader knows what they are looking at. Dates are written day, month, year with full stops between.
Every translator works into their native language, Estonian into English by a native English speaker. We keep õ, ä, ö and ü in names exactly as the passport shows them, because a surname losing its accent can look like a different person to a bank or the Home Office. Certified translations come ready for UK use.
- Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
- Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
- Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
- Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
- Transcription of Estonian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.
English to Estonian translation
Anything for Estonian readers in the UK should be in the modern standard written language, in plain sentences and with the polite form of address. Before commissioning Estonian at all, check your audience: people from Estonia who grew up speaking Russian may read an Estonian leaflet slowly, if at all, so an NHS trust or council may need a Russian version as well. Tell us who the text is for and we will advise.
Estonian court and police interpreters
Estonian comes up in magistrates' and Crown Court cases, employment tribunals and family proceedings, and in extradition requests from Estonia, which in England and Wales are heard at Westminster Magistrates' Court. For any legal booking we look for Estonian interpreters with legal experience and, where interpreters holding them exist for Estonian, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or entry on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). As so few work in the UK, give us the hearing date early.
How to book an Estonian interpreter
- Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
- Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
- Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Estonian language
Estonian is a Finnic language of the Uralic family, close to Finnish. It is spoken mainly in Estonia. Estonian is the official language of Estonia and an official language of the European Union.
Estonian is written in the Latin alphabet, with õ, ä, ö and ü.
At the 2021 Census, 2,640 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Estonian as their main language. The local authorities with the most were Manchester (50 people), Birmingham (49) and the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (47). Source: Office for National Statistics.
Before you book: Estonian is not related to Latvian or Lithuanian; its closest relative is Finnish. Roughly a quarter of Estonia's population speaks Russian as a first language, so check which language the person needs.

Estonian interpreter and translator FAQs
How quickly can I book an Estonian interpreter?
We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Estonian interpreters work nearby.
How much does an Estonian interpreter cost?
The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.
Can you certify Estonian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?
Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.
Do you provide Estonian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?
Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match an Estonian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
How many people speak Estonian in the UK?
At the 2021 Census, 2,640 usual residents of England and Wales aged three or over gave Estonian as their main language. The local authorities with the most were Manchester (50 people), Birmingham (49) and the London borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (47). The census asked for each person's main language, so people who speak Estonian at home but gave English as their main language are not in that figure. Scotland and Northern Ireland count languages in their own censuses.
