English interpreting services

When you book English interpreting, what you are really booking is a language pair, and the quality depends on the other half. We match the interpreter to the speaker's country and dialect as well as the language name, because Spanish from Colombia, Chinese from Hong Kong and French from Senegal each bring their own vocabulary. The English side matters too: an interpreter who has lived here will recognise a Glaswegian or Geordie accent on a phone line and knows what a care plan or an EHCP is.

Consecutive interpreting suits meetings, appointments and interviews. For conferences, training days and site tours, whispered or simultaneous interpreting keeps pace with the speaker.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A English interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified English translation

Most of our translation work ends in English: birth and marriage certificates, degree transcripts, driving licences, bank statements and court papers brought from abroad for the Home Office, a university, an employer or a UK court. For the Home Office, a certified translation should confirm that it is accurate, and give the date and the translator's full name and contact details. Every translator we use translates into their native language, so an English version is written by a native English speaker.

Names are copied from the passport, and dates are set out unambiguously, since 03/04 means March to an American reader and April to a British one.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of English audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to English translation

Translating from English starts with deciding who will read the result. A leaflet for UK residents who speak Polish needs a different tone from a sales brochure for buyers in Warsaw. We also check the English before it goes out: British terms such as council tax, A and E or sixth form have no direct equivalent abroad and need a short explanation rather than a literal rendering. If your source text is in American English, or your readers are, say so and we will follow that spelling and usage.

English court and police interpreters

Courts and tribunals in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland hear evidence in English (and in Welsh where requested in Wales), so any witness, defendant or party who cannot follow English needs an interpreter in their own language. For legal bookings we look for interpreters with legal experience in that language pair, and where interpreters holding them exist for the language, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Legal terms such as bail, caution and disclosure are explained, not just translated.

How to book an English interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

English interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book an English interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many English interpreters work nearby.

How much does an English interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify English translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application.

Do you provide English interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match an English interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
