Dogri interpreting services

Dogri belongs to the Western Pahari group of languages, and its forms are close enough that an interpreter from one part of Jammu can follow a speaker from another. Like Punjabi, it is tonal, which is why the interpreter should be a native speaker rather than someone who came to it through Punjabi or Hindi. Many Dogri speakers also use Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi, and it helps to know which: for a short practical call one of those may do, if the person agrees, while a medical history, a care assessment or a legal interview belongs in Dogri. Consecutive interpreting suits nearly every appointment, and video is usually the realistic way to reach a Dogri interpreter at all.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Dogri interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Dogri translation

Our translators each work into their native language, and Dogri documents are put into English by native English speakers. Dogri has been written in more than one script. It once had its own, Dogra Akkhar, a form of Takri; it has also been written in the Perso-Arabic script; and today Devanagari is its officially recognised script, in which virtually all Dogri books are published. Official papers from Jammu are another matter: until 2020 the administration worked in Urdu and English, so older certificates and records are usually in one of those, and we match the translator to the document rather than to the family's spoken language.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Dogri audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Dogri translation

Translate into Dogri in Devanagari, the script its readers learn today; the old Dogra Akkhar script is rarely used now. Before ordering, think about who will read the text. A Dogri speaker educated in Jammu may read Hindi or Urdu more readily than written Dogri, so for important information one of those may reach them better. For a community message, a text in Dogri tells readers it was written for them.

Dogri court and police interpreters

Dogri won national recognition in 2003 and became an official language of Jammu and Kashmir in 2020, but interpreters with courtroom experience remain scarce in the UK. For legal work we look for native Dogri speakers who have interpreted in legal settings and, where interpreters holding them exist for Dogri, the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or registration with the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). If none is available we will say so, and the court can then decide whether a remote Dogri interpreter, or evidence in Hindi or Urdu with the witness's informed agreement, is the better course.

Dogri interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book a Dogri interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Dogri interpreters work nearby.

How much does a Dogri interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Dogri translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Dogri is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Dogri interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match a Dogri interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
