Assyrian interpreting services

The main thing to get right is where the speaker grew up. An Assyrian from Urmia or Tehran and an Assyrian from Dohuk or Baghdad share a language, but accent, loanwords and some everyday words differ, and older people from mountain villages may keep a local dialect that even other Assyrians find heavy going. Many clients are comfortable in a second language as well, Arabic, Persian, Kurdish or Turkish depending on the country, which helps an interpreter check a meaning. Consecutive interpreting works best. For an asylum interview or a mental health assessment, a face-to-face or video booking with the same interpreter throughout is worth asking for.

Face-to-face interpreting

The interpreter comes to you: a hospital ward, a courtroom, a council office, a home visit or a business meeting. It is the best choice when people need to read expressions as well as words, or when the conversation is long or sensitive.

Telephone interpreting

The quickest option to set up. It works well for short calls, triage, appointment reminders and quick checks with a client.

Video interpreting

A Assyrian interpreter joins by video for remote hearings, consultations and meetings, which helps when there is no interpreter near you.

We also provide medical interpreting and conference interpreting.

Certified Assyrian translation

Assyrian clients mostly bring papers issued by the state they lived in: Iraqi documents in Arabic, Iranian ones in Persian dated by the Iranian solar calendar, Syrian ones in Arabic. Iraqi records give a person's own name followed by their father's and grandfather's names, which does not map neatly onto a British first name and surname. We explain the order in the translation so a caseworker or registrar does not drop a part. Church certificates, community letters and personal papers can be in Assyrian itself. Each translator translates into their native language, and certified copies are signed for UK use.

  • Certified translation of birth, marriage and death certificates, passports, driving licences, degree certificates and bank statements, for the Home Office, courts, universities and employers.
  • Legal translation: witness statements, court bundles, contracts and immigration papers.
  • Document translation of medical reports, letters, leaflets and patient information.
  • Urgent translation when a deadline is close.
  • Transcription of Assyrian audio and video recordings, with an English translation if you need one.

English to Assyrian translation

For written Assyrian aimed at UK readers, the literary standard in Syriac script is the natural choice for church and cultural material. For health or council information aimed at older people who were schooled in Arabic or Persian, ask us about pairing the Assyrian with an Arabic or Persian version, so each reader can use the one they read most easily.

Assyrian court and police interpreters

Assyrian speakers appear before UK tribunals mainly in asylum and immigration appeals, and sometimes in family and criminal courts. Our first choice is an Assyrian interpreter who has worked in legal settings before and, where anyone in Assyrian holds them, has the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (Law) or is on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI). Where no qualified Assyrian interpreter is free, we tell the solicitor or court clerk plainly and discuss the options, rather than sending a speaker of the wrong dialect.

How to book an Assyrian interpreter

  1. Tell us about the assignment: the date, time and address, or that you need telephone or video; how long it should last; and what it is for, such as a hospital appointment, a hearing or a business meeting.
  2. Tell us about the speaker: their country or region and, if you know it, their dialect. Mention any preference for a male or female interpreter.
  3. Get your quote. We email you a quote, with no obligation to book.

About the Assyrian language

Assyrian is a Neo-Aramaic language, part of the Semitic branch of the Afroasiatic family. It is spoken mainly in Assyrian communities from northern Iraq, north-east Syria, south-east Turkey and north-west Iran, and their diaspora.

Assyrian is written in the Syriac alphabet.

Before you book: Assyrian (Sureth) is close to Chaldean Neo-Aramaic, and many speakers follow both. Speakers from Iraq often know Arabic too.

Assyrian interpreter and translator FAQs

How quickly can I book an Assyrian interpreter?

We take bookings 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Telephone and video interpreting are usually the quickest to arrange. For a face-to-face appointment, give us as much notice as you can: same-day cover is often possible, but it depends on where you are and how many Assyrian interpreters work nearby.

How much does an Assyrian interpreter cost?

The price depends on the type of interpreting (face-to-face, telephone or video), how long the appointment lasts, where it is and how much notice you give. We quote before anything is booked, and quotes are free: call 0800 2425 125 or use our online quote form.

Can you certify Assyrian translations for a UK visa or immigration application?

Yes. We translate and certify documents such as birth and marriage certificates, passports and police certificates for visa, settlement and citizenship applications. UK Visas and Immigration asks for each translation to confirm that it is accurate and to show the date and the translator's full name, signature and contact details, so tell us when you order that the document is for an immigration application. Because Assyrian is not written in the Latin alphabet, send us the passport spelling of every name so the translation matches it.

Do you provide Assyrian interpreters for courts, tribunals and police interviews?

Yes. Tell us the setting when you book, for example a Crown Court trial, an immigration tribunal hearing or a police interview under caution, so we can match an Assyrian interpreter with the right legal experience and qualifications.
