Shikomoro Interpreting Services in Ely

UK Linguistic Services arranges professional Shikomoro (Comorian) interpreters in and around Ely for hospitals and GP surgeries, schools and councils, solicitors and immigration appointments, face to face or by telephone and video.

Most of the Comorian diaspora lives in France, around Marseille and Paris above all, and anyone born in Mayotte is a French citizen. So a Shikomoro speaker in Britain may well hold a French passport and speak some French. That does not mean French is the right language for an appointment. Plenty of Comorians, particularly women and older people, use French for forms and Shikomoro for everything that matters, and a consultation about a child's health or a tenancy dispute is exactly the sort of conversation that belongs in the language of home.

Local Shikomoro Interpreters Around Ely

Comorian is one of the rarer languages we are asked for, and interpreters are few and far between in the UK. For an appointment in Ely we will try to find someone who can come to you, but video or telephone interpreting is usually what makes the booking possible at all. Allow as much time as you can, and tell us which island the speaker is from.

Shikomoro to English Interpreter in Ely

Each island has its own variety. Shingazidja on Ngazidja (Grande Comore) and Shimwali on Mwali (Mohéli) form a western pair; Shindzuani on Nzwani (Anjouan) and Shimaore on Mayotte form an eastern pair. Within a pair people understand each other easily. Between Ngazidja and Nzwani it takes effort, and an interpreter from the wrong island may find a stressed speaker hard to follow at speed. Matching the island is the single most useful thing a client can do.

Shikomoro Interpreter for Schools and Councils in Ely

Children from Comorian families often arrive having been schooled in French, and they pick up English quickly. Their parents may not. At a parents' evening, an admissions meeting or a housing appointment, an interpreter lets the parent speak for themselves instead of leaning on the child, which is never a good idea when the subject is the child's own progress or the family's finances.

Shikomoro Medical Interpreter in Ely

Comorian families are overwhelmingly Muslim, and some patients will want a female interpreter for maternity or gynaecology appointments, or will raise fasting in Ramadan when a doctor explains a new medication schedule. An interpreter who shares that background can put such questions to the clinician directly rather than leaving them unsaid.

Ely station is a railway junction, with lines north to King's Lynn, north-west to Peterborough, east to Norwich, south-east to Ipswich and south to Cambridge and London, so an interpreter can come in by train from almost any direction.

Shikomoro Interpreter in Ely: Questions

Does it matter which island a Shikomoro speaker in Ely comes from?

Yes. The eastern and western varieties differ enough that we try to match the island, especially for long or sensitive appointments. A town or village name helps us choose.

Would a Swahili interpreter be any use for a Comorian speaker in Ely?

The two languages share a lot of vocabulary, but not enough for a medical or legal conversation. Book a Shikomoro interpreter, by video if nobody can attend in person.

Is Shikomoro the same as Mahorian?

Mahorian, or Shimaore, is the variety spoken on Mayotte and one member of the Shikomoro family. If the speaker is from Mayotte, say so and we will look for a Shimaore speaker.
