Bengali Interpreter Services in Edinburgh
A Bengali interpreter in Edinburgh turns spoken English into Bengali and back again, live, so that two people without a shared language can talk directly. Typical bookings include antenatal checks, outpatient clinics, benefit and housing interviews, parents' evenings, solicitor meetings and police interviews.
Bengali, also known as Bangla, is the language of Bangladesh and of West Bengal in India. Most British Bangladeshi families trace their roots to the Sylhet Division in the north-east of Bangladesh, and many older relatives grew up speaking Sylheti rather than the standard language taught in schools. Other Bengali speakers here come from Dhaka, Chittagong or elsewhere in Bangladesh, and some from West Bengal or Tripura in India. That mix is why the first question we ask is how the person speaks at home.
Bengali Interpreters Near You in Edinburgh
We do not have an office in Edinburgh. Our Liverpool head office takes each booking, and the Bengali interpreter either travels to the appointment or connects by telephone or video.
In 2021, 199,495 people in England and Wales gave Bengali as their main language, and just over half of them lived in London (ONS Census 2021, table TS024). To see the surrounding streets, see the Edinburgh area on OpenStreetMap (opens in a new tab).
Bengali Interpreter Appointments at Courts and Hospitals in Edinburgh
Edinburgh, Scotland's capital, is its own council area, and the City of Edinburgh had 514,543 residents at Scotland's Census 2022. Edinburgh Sheriff Court and Justice of the Peace Court share the Sheriff Court House at 27 Chambers Street, in the Sheriffdom of Lothian and Borders, and the Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service puts the population it serves at about 450,000. Outside the city, the nearest sheriff courts are Kirkcaldy, about 11 miles north across the Forth, Dunfermline, 13 miles north-west, and Livingston, 14 miles west, which is worth knowing when a client lives in Fife or West Lothian but works in the capital.
NHS Lothian runs the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France in the south-east of the city, where it moved in 2003 from Lauriston Place, its home since 1879; the move is now more than two decades old, but an older address on a letter can still catch people out. The Western General Hospital, about 2 miles west of the centre, is another NHS Lothian hospital, and the Astley Ainslie Hospital lies about 2 miles south, so the hospital name on an appointment letter matters more than the word Edinburgh.
The city has four universities, among them the University of Edinburgh, founded in 1582, and Edinburgh Napier University, with major campuses around Merchiston and Morningside, and their students and staff turn up at the same clinics, offices and hearings as everyone else. Bookings are taken 24/7, and an interpreter working face to face, by telephone or by video can usually be arranged within seconds, whether the appointment is at the Sheriff Court, the Royal Infirmary or a council office. Musselburgh, Dalkeith and Bonnyrigg, all within about 6 miles, are covered in the same way.
Bengali Interpreter Matched to the Speaker's Dialect
Ask first whether the person speaks Sylheti. Sylheti comes from the Sylhet Division of Bangladesh and from the Barak Valley of Assam in India, and linguists disagree on whether it is a dialect of Bengali or a separate language. Academic assessments rate it between hardly intelligible and unintelligible to someone who knows only Standard Bengali, and a speaker who never went to school in Bangladesh may follow a standard interpreter only in part. For that person, book a Sylheti interpreter.
Chittagonian, or Chatgaya, from the Chittagong area of south-east Bangladesh, raises the same issue: it is not readily understood by speakers of other Bengali varieties, so a Standard Bengali interpreter may not be enough. The 2021 Census counted both under Bengali, which means the figures above include people who may need a Sylheti or Chittagonian interpreter.
Speakers from Dhaka and from Kolkata share a standard spoken form, but everyday vocabulary differs between Bangladesh and West Bengal. When you book, tell us the person's home district or state and what they speak with their family.
English to Bengali Interpreter (and Bengali to English)
During the appointment the Bengali interpreter carries your words into Bengali and the reply into English, speaking as each person would ("I take two tablets each morning"). They add nothing, leave nothing out and stay neutral, and you should speak to the patient or client, not to the interpreter.
Bengali marks respect in the word for "you". Apni is the polite form, tumi is for family and friends, and tui is for very close people or children, and the verb changes with each. A professional uses apni with an adult client unless told otherwise.
Bengali Medical Interpreter in Edinburgh: GP, Hospital and Maternity
A patient in England does not pay for a Bengali interpreter at a GP surgery and should not be asked to bring a relative. NHS England's guidance for primary care sets out that interpreting is free at the point of delivery, strongly discourages using family or friends, and says children under 16 should interpret only where immediate, necessary treatment is needed. Ask the surgery or hospital to arrange the interpreter when the appointment is made. In Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, ask the practice or hospital how they book interpreters.
Check the patient's name early. Many Bengalis have a formal name (bhalo nam) used on official papers and a separate pet name (dak nam) used at home, and the two may be unrelated. Among Muslim men, Muhammad, often shortened to Md, frequently comes first but is usually not the name the person goes by. Agreeing which name is on the record avoids mix-ups with prescriptions and letters. For maternity, sexual health or gynaecology, you can request a female interpreter.
Bengali Legal Interpreter in Edinburgh: Solicitors, Courts and Police
For a hearing in England and Wales the interpreter is normally arranged for you. GOV.UK explains that a criminal defendant is provided with one, the prosecution books interpreters for its own witnesses, and a defence witness should speak to the defence solicitor. Scotland and Northern Ireland have separate court systems, where the court or your solicitor is the right place to ask.
In a police interview in England and Wales, PACE Code C rules that a suspect who needs an interpreter is not, as a rule, questioned without one, and that a statement given in Bengali is written down by the interpreter in Bengali, signed by the person, and only then translated into English. A Sylheti speaker interviewed through a Standard Bengali interpreter may miss part of the caution, so tell the custody officer which variety is needed. Solicitors book Bengali interpreters with us for client conferences, statements, family and housing disputes and immigration interviews.
Bengali is among the languages listed on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI), the UK's independent voluntary regulator of public service interpreters, so for legal work you may ask us for an NRPSI-registered Bengali interpreter. Anyone can check a registration free of charge on the NRPSI website.

Bengali Interpreter for Councils, Schools and Social Care
Council housing officers, social workers, health visitors and school staff book Bengali interpreters for home visits, assessments, admissions meetings and child protection conferences. Younger family members often speak more English than their parents, but a child should never be asked to interpret for a parent in these meetings. For safeguarding cases, ask for an interpreter with no link to the family and allow roughly twice the usual time.
Face-to-Face, Telephone or Video Bengali Interpreter
Book a Bengali interpreter in person for anything long, emotional or physical, use the telephone for brief or urgent conversations, and pick video when seeing faces matters but nobody suitable is nearby.
| Option | Best for | Bear in mind |
|---|---|---|
| In person | Consultations with an examination, labour and birth, court and tribunal days, home visits | Book as early as you can; travel time is part of the cost |
| Telephone | Test results, appointment changes, quick questions from a GP or school | Nobody can see gestures or documents, so keep it simple |
| Video | Remote clinics and hearings, or a Sylheti or Chittagonian speaker when no local interpreter is free | Needs a camera, a steady connection and a quiet room |

Bengali Interpreter Cost in Edinburgh
Three things set the cost of a Bengali interpreter in Edinburgh: the length of the appointment, whether the interpreter is there in person or on the phone or video, and the distance they travel. Because Bengali is widely spoken in England, an in-person interpreter is often based nearer than for a rarer language; a Sylheti or Chittagonian speaker may need a wider search, and video removes travel altogether. You get a quote before you commit. NHS appointments are booked and paid for by the practice or hospital, not the patient.

Bengali Interpreter in Edinburgh: Questions and Answers
How much does a Bengali interpreter cost in Edinburgh?
The price follows the length of the appointment, whether the Bengali interpreter is in the room or on the phone or video, and how far they travel. Tell us the date, venue, expected length and whether Sylheti is needed, and the quote comes back free before you decide.
Can I get a Bengali interpreter in Edinburgh at short notice?
Often, yes. Bengali is one of the more widely spoken community languages in England, and we take bookings 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, so ring as soon as you know. If no Bengali or Sylheti interpreter can reach Edinburgh in time, we offer one by telephone or video for the same appointment.
Can I ask for a female Bengali interpreter?
Yes. Requests for a woman come most often from maternity, gynaecology and sexual health clinics, and from patients who would rather not discuss their body through a man. Ask when you book and say whether she needs to speak Sylheti as well as Bengali.
Can my son or daughter interpret for me instead?
It is better not to. NHS England asks GP practices not to rely on family or friends, and allows a child under 16 to interpret only when immediate, necessary treatment is needed. A Bengali interpreter from outside the family stays impartial, knows the medical terms and will not soften bad news or skip a question that feels awkward between parent and child.
Is Sylheti the same as Bengali for interpreting?
Not always. Many British Bangladeshi families speak Sylheti at home, and some speakers, especially those who did not go to school in Bangladesh, find Standard Bengali hard to follow. Tell us which one the person speaks and we will book a Sylheti or Bengali interpreter to suit.
Is there a Bengali interpreter near me in Edinburgh?
Bengali interpreters for Edinburgh are booked through our Liverpool head office; there is no UKLS branch in the town. Send the venue address and say whether Standard Bengali or Sylheti is spoken, and we check who is nearest. If the closest match is too far for the date, a Bengali interpreter joins by telephone or video instead.

About the Bengali Language
Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family. It is the national and official language of Bangladesh and an official language of the Indian states of West Bengal and Tripura and of the Barak Valley in Assam. It is written in the Bengali script, and India's 2011 census recorded more than ninety million people there who speak it as their first language, making it India's second most spoken language after Hindi. International Mother Language Day, held each year on 21 February, recalls the Bengali Language Movement of 1952.
